I can't say I was really a Tom Petty fan but I certainly can't say I disliked him either. I'm familiar with his work because he was such a presence in American music and I'm truly sad that he's gone because it creates another hole in our musical culture and in my youth and because he was just too young to die. When I was a kid, we sang a lot in the car. My dad (who had a beautiful tenor voice) sang solos in church, was always in the choir, and was often the song leader, so singing in the car was just normal.
