Diana, Princess of Wales, was almost exactly 2 years older than me (I was born June 27, 1963 and she was born July 1, 1961), just 3 1/2 months older than my best friend. When she got engaged to Prince Charles, we were a little envious. I think a lot of girls that age were perhaps a little envious because sometimes teenage girls - even older teenage girls - aren't as smart as they should be. Not that we ever thought we'd have actually ever had a chance to marry, much less meet, Prince Charles, but now he was off even the fantasy market. Of course Prince Andrew was still single....
Yeah, hindsight is a wonderful thing. Looking back, I would never have wanted to be in Diana's place - or Prince Charles' for that matter. What's the point of all the prestige and money that being a royal comes with if you're going to be miserable for the rest of your adult life? I can't help thinking that if Diana had married someone more suited to her, she may still be alive today - 60 not that old anymore - and if Prince Charles and Camilla had married back in the day, he'd have been a happier and more well-adjusted person. (But maybe he was too immature back then to make a happy marriage with anyone - who knows?) (And I won't even address Prince Andrew!)
Not that that every royal seems to be living a miserable life - Prince William and Catherine are currently in Belize, dancing and eating chocolate. That has to make up for a few factory openings!
