So, kind of unsure of how I feel about this episode.
It's kind of frustrating with a storyline stretched out over 10 episodes. Couldn't they have an alien of the week episode, with the 'miracle day' effect going on through out the season?
CoE worked better I think because it was shown on consecutive days, even though I didn't like the actual end.
So on to what I thought of Episode 3:
Liked the opening, went straight to Freidkin's (?) home. Glad they didn't have a scene with trying to figure out who betrayed them, as it was obvious.
Esther was a bit dull, when she couldn't read the GPS tracker, and thought about calling her sister. For someone who in ep. 2 wanted to be where the 'fun' is, she's not really equipped for field work, or even assisting in field work. She seems to be more suitable in a role as researcher/analyst. As a CIA she should know how it works, if you're on the run, then you need to be cautious, and think ahead. May sound a bit harsh but I just can't identify with any aspect of her character.
Esther translating Gwen's speech, she survived shopping for it all, so kind of unnecessary. Us viewers aren't really that stupid not to know what she's saying. Now translating 'cockblocking the ATF' well I can see how Gwen wouldn't really know about the ATF so that's okay. And the bit with the changing 'pants' funny. So yeah, Esther isn't really impressing me. Her down to earth, sweetness they keep going on about really isn't touching anything in me. Sorry.
Rex, is still brash, and rude EVERYWHERE!!! Still not endearing, in any situation. If they survive, I really can't see them as part of the 'Torchwood Institute', and so far watching 'Miracle Day' I'm not getting that 'Torchwood' feeling. If they didn't constantly mention 'Torcwhood' I wouldn't know that is the show I was watching.
Stealing a Car w/ Gwen Cooper 101: Check if doors unlocked. Then smash window with a rock!!! "Got one!"...simple!
"Bigger on the inside, than on the outside"- Yeah nice nod to 'Doctor Who' but kind of felt wrong. This new 'Torchwood' is so far removed from the spin-off that looked like a spiffier version of 'DW' that it's wasted to me.
So they find out about PhiCorp, why or why does Jack let Rex call his mentor. Seriously, the CIA is against you, you've got here on your own, but lets call a mentor, of course they aren't going to have HIS phone tapped. You would think after CoE they would know the government isn't much help, they'd rather just sweep it under the carpet. And why not do some more research, digging before you try to take down a multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical company!!!
Really not understanding Jack, it's like he's just coasting along. Sure there's bits, very little, where Jack shines, but at others it's like he doesn't really want to be there.
Gwen & Esther Bonding- yeah, it's nice that Gwen has another girl, who has family, but it's one of those things that really got me about Gwen in the old 'TW' it came across like her having family put her above the others. So I didn't care for it. Didn't add anything to the story for me.
Bar/Sex Scene- BORING!!! The bar scene, no chemistry. Flirting over the coat, *rolleyes*. Delivery of the lines- DULL, no sexiness at ALL!!! Eye contact neither hot, sexy, or anything remotely interesting. Brad was a BORE! The episode could have done without it!
Drunken Confessions- Broke my heart! It was nice hearing them talk about Ianto. But it wasn't enough, nothing really in depth. You just know they miss him, and Jack wished he was there, which is kind of cheapened by the fact that he's shagged Brad the Boring Bartender, and is in bed next to him. Would have been so much better if they just had Jack get drunk and maybe watching couples, revel in the miracle, and yearn for that with Ianto. Would have been so much more poignant.
JACK REALLY IS ALONE!!! :-((
OMG! Rhys and Anwen, totally cute! Liked that they weren't forgotten. But broke my heart when Gwen completely forgot about Jack and hung up on him.
Glaring continuity issue: the CONTACTS!!!
How could Gwen have the contacts, last we knew they were in the possession of Frobisher assistant. Kind of hard to believe she gave them back to Gwen.
Hungover Jack- LOL! He's really enjoying that mortality.
Rex: You weren't impaled.
Jack: You should have seen the other guy!
Kind of felt sorry for Esther, when Rex say's his relationship with Vera isn't exactly professional. The starry eyed innocent crushing isn't a good look for her.
matrix!Gwen- hee! loved her badass walk. Though I don't understand the importance of the contacts on this mission, when a simple ear bud could have worked. They were used better in 'Reset' and 'CoE'...
As for everyone else:
Jilly Kitzinger- Really don't trust or like her character still. Her bubbly attitude doesn't get me interested in her. Sure I'd like to know where she fits in, but not really chomping at the bit to really get to know her.
Vera Juarez- Still unsure of her character. Maybe once they get rolling with her actual purpose in solving the miracle, I'll change my mind.
Oswald Danes- CREEPER!!! Nothing more to say, he's got that down. Really don't like his character.
The episode was good, not great. Not much I liked about it, but then again, I'm not liking much of the season or the new characters. It doesn't click with me. And the chemistry at times between the characters, are a sometimes hit or miss.
