Back in the cyber-world

Our Thanksgiving weekend was spent at my brother's house where the only internet connection is dial-up - and he doesn't like to have the phone tied up!  So we were totally off-line from Wednesday afternoon until this morning.  I think I've finally caught up on e-mail and LJ posts.  Whew!

Wednesday, we left home later than planned - as usual -  and didn't get to my brother's house until after 1am.  He had been working on cleaning up the kitchen for about four days so it took "only" about an hour and a half to get it to where I could start food prep.  Before finally falling into bed after 4am, I made two jello-based salads.

A little background.  My brother lives in the house built by our G-G-Grandparents in 1871.  He moved in with our Mom when his now-ex threw him out in 1988.  He's been alone there for about four years now.  It's a big house that takes a lot of maintaining and he also works on his trucks and steam-engine.

Thursday morning I started by making the pumpkin pies.  Jeb helped by making the filling while I did the crust.  As soon as they came out of the oven the turkey went in.  I actually got to watch about 45 minutes of the parade while the turkey cooked.   We prepped the other dishes while waiting for the turkey.   I got some good pictures of my boys and brother peeling potatoes!    Dinner was planned for about 4 - and we sat down about 4:30.  Pretty good for us!   My cousin came from Beckley, and we had my orphaned-for-the-weekend nephew (sis went to in-laws in NC with husband and younger two).    Other brother came w/o wife and daughter.  SIL stayed with her mom after their earlier dinner and niece had to return north with BF.   We were a table of eight.  Small for us.

Our Menu:
Turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy
Broccoli Casserole
Corn pudding
Cranberry jello salad (with pineapple)
Green jello salad (a family tradition)
Green beans
Applesauce
Sweet potatoes
Pumpkin pie

We finished most of the left-overs Sunday for lunch before we started back home.  Jeb picked the turkey carcas so it wouldn't still be in the back refrigerator when we get there for Christmas.  We had to throw out last Christmas' turkey on our visit in August!  (See note above about brother who lives alone!)

Edit:  One last thought on Thanksgiving dinner.  I was at a table of 7 men, all but two single, the youngest 17.  The discussion turned to girl-friends at one point and I said it would be nice to have some girl-friends included so I could have their company in the kitchen.   Not that the guys didn't help .  .  .  I couldn't have done it without them.

wv, thanksgiving, family
