seaux - i thought i was going to get out of that meeting and be able to run directly to my computer and tell all of you what will be included on my masters recital... but i can't. and it's all my fault. we have the entire thing planned - EXCEPT - i have to decide between two pieces.... and all of you are going to help me.... i hope.
here it is:
Youth Wind Ensemble -
Drednought - Brooks
Four Scottish Dances - Arnold
University Wind Ensemble -
Sweelinck Variations - Noon, D.
now here's the tricky part and, appropriately, the part with which i am asking your assistance:
University Wind Ensemble -
Niagara Falls - Daughtery
VS.
University Symphony Band -
Symphony No. 4 - Maslanka
for those of you who are not familiar with the pieces of which i am speaking, here is some information for you
Niagara Falls -
10 minutes [appx]
no extra personnel needed
somewhat repetitious
groovy backbeat and neat figures throughout
rhythmic ostinati and more difficult figures are shared through the ensemble
really well-trained harpist needed
Total Music Time: 45 minutes [including the other three]
Symphony No. 4 -
30 minutes [appx]
extra personnel needed
amazingly crafted/written/inspired
very sparse and demanding
difficult soli and exposed parts
Total Music Time: 88 minutes [including the other three]
i have ALWAYS wanted to do symphony no. 4, but at the same time i need to be somewhat realistic here. four scores that i MUST know inside and out! i have to write on these, dissect them and give them the attention and the rehearsal time that they need. in some ways, i think the maslanka would actually be easier bc i can conduct that thing without a score - i would just have to analyze it. niagara falls is completely new, but less material to work with and to have to write about. TD was all about the maslanka until he looked and saw that the damn niagara falls was on my list - - - he wanted to give it a listen and i said "ok" just to be nice, but it's actually a really really nice piece. now im stuck. what to do...
please help
and yes - i realize that this is a problem that i will kill to have in about 8 months... but it's a problem now, so i'll enjoy it and deal with it :)
thanks guys!
