the emerald isle

Everybody remember when I won a free trip to Ireland at New Years? Well, I'm there! And these are my impressions:

Dublin sucks. Ok, so it's not that bad, but it's just a big city like anywhere else. Only a bit backwards. Public transportation is a disaster (I've beeen in Europe too long to accept a place that only runs on cars, how un-American of me) and it's just dirty and confusing.

But then we went to Kerry, and Kerry is beautiful. We went hiking and to the beach and kayaking, which was heaps fun. We also went to a festival called Puck Fair. Puck Fair got started some hundreds of years ago. The English troops were coming over the mountains to slaughter (or occupy, take your pick) a town, but on the way through the mountains they scared up a troop of goats. Most of the goats ran off into the hills, but one of them ran down into the town, which warned the townspeople that the English were coming and so they all grabbed up their weapons and went into the mountains and killed a bunch of Englishmen. They then named the goat Puck. Hence, Puck Fair. To celebrate they have a bunch of bands and food stalls and gypsies selling stolen stuff and they build a big tower thing and put one of Puck's decendents on top of it in a cage for 3 days. So I'm guessing Puck's wishing he'd let the Irish die afterall.

And I bought the complete series of Father Ted, which if you haven't seen you must cause it's hilarious. And I bought Adam some beautiful crystal whiskey tumblers. Not whiskey, cause he only likes scotch (bloody Scots), but I figure he can put scotch in his Irish whiskey tumblers and everyone's happy.

Anywho, having a lovely time, but looking forward to home, too. Funny how having Adam makes me like Munich more. I've gotten used to sharing a bed again and I like it, even if he does snore. And fart, occasionally.
