Notes: This chapter was based off of Dein Herz by Damian Dawn. It was mostly the melody of the song that inspired this chapter rather than the lyrics. There is an English version to this song, but I think listening to the German version while reading this chapter fits better.

Jack watched as Dean slowly turned from the window and turned off the light. Only street lamps lit the night now, and the blond reluctantly turned away, walking down the street. Dean had ended their relationship a month ago and Jack felt incredibly guilty. It had been all his fault, but at the same time, he couldn't just finish everything he had with her.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Yes, yes, yes!" she exclaimed and flung her arms around Jack.
Jack hugged his girlfriend tightly. He was overjoyed that she had said yes, but he felt something tug at the back of his mind. Dean's face appeared, making the blond grimace. Jack had to admit that what he and Dean had was wonderful, but she...she was perfect and the one he wanted to spend the rest of his life with.
Right? he thought to himself.
His girlfriend pulled back. "Something wrong?"
Jack shook his head. "Of course not."
She smiled and tugged at his hand. "Let's go out."
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Jack spun her around and she giggled happily. She reached out for his hand and he warmly took it in his own. The blond leaned in to kiss her, but something in the corner of his eye caught his attention. He turned his head and his eyes opened wide as he saw Dean's shocked face and then, Dean running away.
"Jack?" his girlfriend asked, oblivious of Dean.
Jack swallowed and looked back at her. "There's something I need to do."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dean stopped in his tracks and Jack quickly jumped behind a tree. The blond peeked out and saw Dean stare at the ground momentarily before beginning to walk again.
Jack followed at a considerable distance behind his best friend as they passed the river, cafe, and many other places the two had spent time together.
Dean sighed and entered a bookstore, while Jack remained outside. The blond lingered for a moment before heading back to his flat. What have I done?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Why did you lie to me?" Dean choked out.
Jack bit the inside of his cheek. "Well, I wasn't with her when you and I...Dean, I didn't realize that you actually thought we were as serious as..."
Dean glared at his friend. "So, all that we had done...it meant nothing to you?" He hastily wiped his eyes.
Jack reached out. "No, of course not."
Dean stepped back. "What am I then?"
"You're...you're Dean. You're my best friend."
"I trusted you, Jack! I guess I'm nothing compared to her, especially since I'm not a woman."
Jack furrowed his brows. "It has nothing to do with that. We had been dating for six years, Dean. You can't expect me to forget my relationship with her!"
"And yet you expect me to forget what we had together," Dean bit back bitterly.
"Dean, no. I-"
"Goodbye, Jack," Dean whispered. The brunet picked up his jacket and exited Jack's flat.
Jack watched as Dean softly shut the door before he sat down, his entire body numbing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Jack, please stop staring out the window."
Jack turned to his girlfriend. "I'm sorry. I was just...thinking."
She sighed. "What happened between you and Dean, anyways? I thought you two were best friends."
The blond opened his mouth and decided on saying something completely different from the truth. "We just went our separate ways. That's all."
His girlfriend hmm'd before going back into the kitchen.
Jack turned to the window again and let out a sigh. Deep down, he knew both Dean and him were hurting, yet the blond continued to deny his own hurt, engrossing himself with his girlfriend and their new life together. When thoughts of Dean came, he shoved them away and told himself that them being apart was the best thing for the two of them.
As Jack thought this, he hugged the pillow in his arms to his body and watched the rain trail down the window.
