Freezing and bored at work. Today I was thinking about science words. And how ridiculous they are. Someone at work started talking about taking a scale offline. Offline. Which means they are going to unplug the thing.

Aliquot. A portion or part of a sample is an aliquot. Everyone goes around saying "take an aliquot of that sample." Not just like "take some of the sample" or "50 mL of the sample." Everyone's taking a 50mL aliquot. Ridiculous.

Another one is when you stir something up and let the solids settle to the bottom of the liquid, the top part is called the supernate. Is that really necessary? Take some of the supernate?

When you take a volume of something, you fill it so the meniscus (good lord) lines up with the volume line. If you screw this up, I believe it's called parallax. Like it needs to be called anything.

They also turn things into verbs that aren't verbs. Like "can you pH this sample for me?" No I can't. I could take the pH. But that's all. That's all I'm doing goddammit. Science really weirds me out sometimes.

In other news, they keep replaying this christmas song over and over on lite105..The Most Wonderful time of the year...which talks about marshmallows for roasting and scary ghost stories. What kind of christmas in a tent are these people having?!

Oh my god. I think I'm ornery.

Latte or not,

Oh man I am almost done with Season 4 Alias. I blew through a lot of it all snuggled up with a cheese pizza last night. So good. Thanks for getting me back on the bandwagon, Smokey.
