As the senior developer here at the office, I manage the tech department and handle all technical job openings. We posted a job opening a month-ish ago and I have been recieving a new resume every so often. However, it really annoys me that of the several I have received, only one of them has actually been qualified for the job. More to the point, ( Read more... )

For my short stint on unemployment, I would ask if they were hiring before I applied. If they said yes, I looked elsewhere...

I'm going to assume you mean that if they said "no, not hiring", you looked elsewhere. ;)
It just happened again today. I recieved yet another resume. Here's the introductory note:
Hi, my name is ****** and I would like to learn more about Software Development. If I am not qualified for the position at hand can i possibly be considered for a temp to hire position, as I am very interested in the computer world. Thank you Very Much.

Generally, pretty reasonable. However, here's the first few lines of the job opening post (with emphasis added):

Job opening for a full-time Software Developer, working for a small private company with an established national market.

A working knowledge of development in Visual Basic 6 and an understanding of database design principals are required with experience using SQL queries a plus. A strong base in object-oriented design and programming is desired, preferably using C#, Java or C++. Experience with source control and maintaining Microsoft servers including MS SQL Server is an additional plus. ( ... )

Actually, I sent a civil reply to this one suggesting they pick up the free C# Express from MS and learn some OO basics.
To another one that didn't even express interest in computers I replied somewhat more caustically.

Good lord no! I wanted my free money, I tried as hard as I could not to get hired!

But, ya know...I was dumping apps into big ass companies with no standards, it sounds quite annoying to app to you, as your requirements are quite exact.
