A nice brush with evil

I haven't updated in a while. Yeah.

I got test results back from my surgery. It turns out I have overreactive lymph nodes and it's nothing to be concerned with. So it seems I'm not going to die after all, and I can quit going to the doctor for a while (I went 6 or 7 times in the past 4 weeks). Or at least until my next bout with hypochondriasis.

I had a pleasant, albeit, cold evening at The Quest in Minneapolis last night. I saw Type O Negative and Cradle of Filth play. It was a great show. The opening act was Moonspell, but they had bus problems and couldn't make it.

This was a fun experience. As most of my friends know, I like a lot of different kinds of music. A lot of people say they like all kinds of music but seem to get stuck in one world, but I find some really interesting (and not so interesting) shit in this world. And while I've listened to my share of metal, I don't think I've ever been to a live black/death metal (getting nit-picky here) show. I've been to a couple Ozzfests that weren't anywhere near as evil as this show.

Another funny thing is that I attended this show with my brother and his co-worker. That's not really funny, until you realize that we were pretty much the most "normal" looking people there. I say "normal" because "normal" is different for everyone. I guess I was more dressed up than I'd normally be, so that wasn't normal either. I also have no problem with the Goth mentality, appearances, whatever definition of Goth these Goth people like to follow. I don't find them weird and I don't think they're freaks. I've always enjoyed and been intrigued with Goth and whatever it is, but never been so interested in dressing up that way myself. I guess I just can't pull it off. I like the look of the piercings and the make up and the angriness of some, and I definitely find the goth women attractive. I'd totally go for a goth chick, but I always think that I wouldn't be freaky enough for them or something.

So when three guys walk in to a club for a metal show, one wearking khakis and a collared shirt, the other wearing a sweatshirt and jeans, and the last wearing a turtleneck and moleskin dockers, they're definitely the minority. So I take that back, we weren't the "normal" ones.

The show itself was grand. As I said before I listen to a lot of metal, but not so much in the death/black/whatever metal vein as Type O Negative and Cradle of Filth. I thought I'd go and hear a vocalist sing things I couldn't understand (which I don't mind) and just some overall brutal music. I got just that.

Type O Negative was up first and they were great. Pete Steele really IS huge, and you should hear that goddamn voice. I'm not joking hear, when he hit low notes, I could feel my balls flapping in joyous vibration from the PA. The sound was good, they were tight, and Pete Steele gave some lucky fan the bottle of wine he drank through out the set. I bet the big bastard barely got buzzed off of it either.

Cradle of Filth was also great for what they are. Their set was non-stop thrashing. They were incredibly tight through all the tempo changes and complex riffs, it's just a shame that the mix was awful. I think the drums and bass may have been too loud, so the highs in the guitar just couldn't come through. And the singer, good God, the singer. I knew from the albums I'd hear a ridiculous amount of shrieking and growling, but I couldn't believe how well he'd do it live. Ever high pitched shriek and low growl was there all night long. I wonder when his vocal chords will just shit and he'll have nothing left. The chick opera singer was not loud enough in the mix and you couldn't hear her at all.

CoF also had some theatrics. They had these two guys/gals in gargoyle suits who would do poses. Then they had this chick who climbed this long ribbon hanging from the ceiling and she did this crazy circus shit. It was quite impressive. I have to admit that there was a small part of me that wanted to see her fall and get hurt. It would have been funny. Then she came out later and twirled these flaming sticks around, which was also impressive. But yeah, I kinda thought it would be funny to see her start on fire.

All in all, it was highly energetic and entertaining. I'll see both bands when they come around again. Sometimes a night of evil metal is just fun to get your mind off of other things. I recommend it.
