Applying for jobs again today. I was at Working Links, the ones I have to go to as penance for daring to be unable to get myself employed in this recession. I was phoned up while there by an agency that wanted to put me forwards for a job. After some chat we established it was a job I had been to an interview for about a year ago. The Royal Bank of Scotland has a call centre in Kegworth. Despite not employing me then they have routinely re-advertised the post repeatedly since then and numerous agencies have called me to see if they could me forwards for the post, yet none get anywhere, and I wish I knew why. I am well able to do the job and could have been employed ten times over.
Meanwhile my laptop is going funny on me. If left alone for about twenty minutes it will go blue screen of death and die on me. I know it has some viruses, as I have started the virus scan repeatedly, but it never finishes. The advices is generally not to use the pc/laptop while virus scanning, but if you don't then after 20 minutes it dies, and because of that it never actually deals with the viruseseses [virii?]. So I don't know if it is down to the many virusy things or if it is the hard rive error I also know I have, or something else entirely! I am currently writing this while the virus scan runs, with fingers crossed. I have already tried safe mode. No luck.
The problem is that I cannot afford another laptop, I know I need to replace the hard drive [£40] but for various reasons have no setup disc so would need a replacement [£45] or a windows installation [£80}, both of which cost money on top of the new hard drive. THEN I need a new battery as it lasts approximately four minutes at the moment and not everywhere has readily available plug sockets, and the battery will cost a good £80. So, it is all going to cost a lot of money, and it is money I do no have, but it is still cheaper than a new laptop/netbook.
Also there are other things we need the money for, the car needs new rear tyres or we will all die horribly, the rear wheel arches need bodywork or the car won't pass the next MOT. We may need a new microwave, probably need a new cooker, we need more storage in the bedroom, and want various things. Most of which comes well before my laptop, so I am not sure when, or if, I will be able to do anything about it. Basically I just need to get the data on this laptop backed up, luckily I did get am external USB 1 Terrabyte hard drive for Christmas.
There, lots of boring computer talk and whinging about money and jobs. I bet that was worth several minutes of your life wasn't it?
