Firefox is Made of Win

Apr 01, 2009 08:14

I'm finally breaking down and switching to Firefox. I'm sick of the IE - the slow behemoth.

I need to find out other cool stuff Firefox can do. I know you can add extensions or something.

That is all.

** Update: How do I set Firefox as my default browser? For example, if I click a link from Outlook, it is still launching Internet Explorer.

I've yet to figure out what's so bad about IE. I know everyone complains about it in a general way but no one mentions any details, and it works just fine for me.

Also, Firefox has this little nifty tool called adblock that blocks ads. Everywhere.

I think when you download it, it will ask you if you want to use it as your default. That's how I always remember doing it.

I've been using Firefox for a long time, and I love it. What's great is you don't get as much pop up as you do with IE. Most spyware and viruses are geared to microsoft, so using firefox kind of helps you avoid funky stuff happening when you browse.

I love all the themes they have and there are some pretty neat add ons. I also love the tabs, which IE started using recently, however they don't hold a candle to the Firefox tabs. Firefox is much easier to use.

Yeah, once you use it for a while you'll never go back to IE. The shitty thing is, there are some sites that don't support Firefox as a browser, so you still might now and then use IE. If you see you go to a site and have a hard time loading it or it doesn't load, that's likely the case.

At work I have a few sites that I can only access via IE.

I use Firefox exclusively. I recommend the Flashblock extension and DownloadHelper and ColorfulTabs and the bookmark synchronizer.

I second the bookmark synchronizer with both hands.

What does Flashblock do as compared to Adblock?

I heart Flashblock! It blocks all Flash content on a page (not just ads) and leaves a placeholder so you can choose to play it or not. Flash tends to mess with my old, slow computer so I appreciate the speedy page loading.

And I love bookmark synchronizer because it syncs the bookmarks from my son's computer so I can double-check to see what he's favoriting.

If you go into your Control Panel > Internet Options > Programs tab, you can set your default browser there.

I love Firefox too! There's this extension called WOT, Web of Trust, that shows what links are safe for you to click, and if you enter a dangerous website, it warns you.
There's No Script too. It blocks all Java/Flash things and then you just allow those things you trust. (If you have NoScript and you go to You Tube, for example, the player won't show and the site will tell you you don't have Java, but you just have to click on the Noscript thing and mark You Tube as trustful. I hope it makes sense...)

Is it really that helpful? I mean, there might be many times when I would need to deblock the Java things. Or not as much as it seems at first?

Well, once you de-block something, you don't need to do it again (unless you choose to de-block temporarily). But, yeah, the first few times is annoying, since you have to go about de-blocking everything on the websites you use more often.
