I moved to DC

For all those who do not know this, I moved to DC and am starting working for a satellite company here called Intelsat. Yesterday I hopped on the metro to check it out, and the place is HUGE. Read CU people criss to library, leid to humanities at the min. It is also protected by a huge iron gate and next to three embassies and the Univ. of DC.
Additionally I would just like to say that they have more upscale shops in their union station than village point and Orland (sans the dept stores). It was a little overwhelming and might be very bad till I move out closer to work bc I will be walking through it all before and after work each day... bubye paycheck (j/k rent is too expensive).
It is weird out here, the architecture is really cool, but real estate is crazy. These mini row houses go for upwards of 2-3 million. studios cost 1500 per month. A lot of people here are friendly but a lot of that is because they want to network, which to me sounds a little less genuine than the 'I just want to be nice to people cause I like people' mentality of the Midwest. But being in the capitol of the nation, I can understand their need to network and call and return favors. It is the way the bills get passed and people get jobs and advance.
It is also weird because I am not political, do not really care about politics and think of them as gossip and drama on a national scale. But people here want to know what is going on and what is going down. I guess I should learn more about the system and who is who, but I really just don't care too much. It does not help that my roomies at the moment are into the political arena. I am living with my brother who is working for the national coal mining ass. (its a lobbyist group) and my cousin Alicia who is working for the IRI which helps struggling nations help to set up governments, or something like that. I am also living on the hill, just 12 blocks away from all the action, so that might have something to do with my slighted view of things. Ahh well. More updates later.
