Perfection

I think that one of summer's greatest pleasures for me is sitting back and listening to the cicadas sing and the hum of the lawnmower while a cool breeze brings in the scent of freshly cut grass. It's a good life when that happens for me. I find it calming and particularly and pleasantly summer.

I tried to sleep in today. 2 hours later than normal, which is saying something for me. Still, I was up far too early in my mind. My body just seems to be too used to getting up early for work. Today I spent running final errands and pretty much avoiding any packing. I don't have anything packed for vacation and we leave tomorrow at 7am. I figure, I still have about 10 hours, right?

Plans for vacation? Sleeping in as much as possible, lounging on the hammock while reading a book listening to the soft repetition of Lake Michigan's waves, watching a few movies, and enjoying some fantastic sunsets while eating dinner and having good conversation. This is the experience associated with "The Kotch". It's not a cottage anymore. In fact, our close friends live up there full time now, but the memories of childhood and the feelings of relaxation remain. I LOVE IT.

I'm almost done with my work schedule, so I thought I'd comment on the audio books that I've listened to. I've gotten through 9 of them, with one more saved up for the last 2 days of work after vacation.

Here's what I've got:
1. How I Paid for College: A Novel of Sex, Theft, and Friendship by Marc Acito (funny read about high school life and acting)
2. The Fourth Bear by Jasper Fforde (literary allusions and hilarity abound)
3. Asylum by Patrick Mcgrath (a bit of a depressing read about the obsession behind an affair with a patient in a psychiatric hospital)
4. What I Was by Meg Rosoff (childhood Catholic school and secret adventures)
5. Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac by Gabrielle Zevin (how would you cope with forgetting 4 years of your life in high school?)
6. The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo (for as hyped up as it was, it really was an amazing read)
7. Pretty Birds by Scott Simon (the tale of a teenage girl who is recruited to be a sniper in the Bosnian war)
8. Artemis Fowl: The Lost Colony by Eoin Colfer (great series, great 5th book)
9. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini (just read it, it's good)

I have the newest Artemis Fowl book to listen to after vacation: Artemis Fowl: The Time Paradox

So sure, some of them were middle school novels, but some were great books about pungent situations and exciting characters.  A good summer reading list.  I'll have a list of the actual books I've read after I finish vacation.
