I'd suggest David Weber's Honor Harrington books, especially the first three. Those are easier on the brain than the later techno-political tomes. I have no trouble with the later because I enjoy reading about political conflict as much as I do military ( ... )

Gunpowder God was actually the UK title. The sequels were Great King's War (Roland Green & John F. Carr) and Kalvan Kingmaker (John F. Carr). I've never seen a copy of Carr'sSiege of Tarr-Hostigos, but it may actually exist.

I don't own the 16XX stuff (at the moment), but if you want to try the others, let me know.

"Siege of Tarr-Hostigos" appeared as a contribution to one of Jerry Pournelle's "There Will Be War" anthologies back in the 80s. I know because I read it. It's a ripping good story; I will not spoil it for you of you should ever find it.

...the Aryan migration went EAST across Eurasia in the Kalvan-verse, not west. West is the historical migration...

The battle of Fyk in Lord Kalvan is the battle of Barnet (14/4/1471) during the Wars of the Roses, slightly recast.

I enjoyed Lynn Flewelling's Nightrunner trilogy (starting with "Luck in the Shadows"), if you haven't read it already.
