Burnley 3 Sunderland 1

3 points again! We're the first newly-promoted team to win the first 3 home games of a season in 17 years - and the last team to do so was Them Down The Road (8 Miles West Along The M65).

It was an early kick-off because it was on the TV, so Mum and I listened to it on the radio. It sounded like a really good match, although for the first half it was all Sunderland - every time they got the ball it seemed like they had a good chance of scoring. It was decidedly nerve-wracking, so it was a surprise when, not long before half-time, we got awarded a penalty. Having since seen the challenge on MotD (Match of the Day), it was a stupid stupid challenge - Wade Elliott was, if anything, going away from the ball - but Anton Ferdinand had absolutely no intention of going for the ball, so it was an iron-clad penalty. Graham Alexander stepped up to the penalty spot and of course he scored. He's scored 68 of the 72 penalties he's taken in his career - a formidable record. It wasn't actually a particularly good penalty - if the goalie had stayed put, it'd've been saved - but that doesn't reall matter; what matters is that we scored.

Sunderland got an equaliser not long after that. We were expecting it, to be honest, and were also expecting more to come.

And then in the second half it was a much more balanced game. Sunderland made a substitution that seemed to unravel their midfield and not long after, we put David Nugent, formerly of Preston and Portsmouth, on - and he scored twice! Both lovely goals. We were on top throughout the second half, so it was a deserved result.

And Robbie Blake's goal against Man Utd is in the August Goal of the Month competition on MotD!

premiership, football, burnley
