Recast! Stumptown goes Firefly!
Meet Dex Parios and her crew. Formerly from Portland, Oregon, they lifted off from Planet Earth, just a bit on the run from various authorities, for various reasons, and now roam among the stars in a slightly broken-down but still classic Firefly-class cruiser, looking for jobs hauling cargo and occasionally solving crimes, a job that many of them are well-suited for, given their pasts. Moving from dirtside lifestyles to life in the Black has been an adjustment, but they've each found their feet. They bicker and jostle just like a family, but despite the rough-scrabble life, they're mostly happy. Their only real worry is whether their pasts will catch up to them...and the fact that the ship, Serenity, has an odd habit of loudly playing music from an unseen music player. Mostly songs from the 20th century.
Dex Parios (Cobie Smulders) as The Captain. Dex is former military intelligence and served in Afghanistan; she still suffers from PTSD from that experience. When she landed back home in Portland, she became a private investigator since her love of fighting and pugnacious personality, not to mention her drinking and gambling problems, made her ill-suited for regular work.
Miles Hoffman (Michael Ealy) as The First Mate. Formerly a Portland police detective, he got involved with Dex romantically, and though that ended, they continued to be enmeshed until a bad situation motivated them to escape their lives in Portland. On board ship, he has proven to be a good second-in-command, without the erratic brilliance of the Captain, but calmer and more diplomatic when needed.
Ansel Parios (Cole Sibus) as The Engineer. Dex's little brother, abandoned by their parents while Dex was in Afghanistan but rescued by Dex upon her return, has proven to be a surprisingly adept mechanic for the ship despite having Down Syndrome. Of all the crew, he is probably the most uniformly happy being on a ship, out in space, with all of his favorite people.
Grey McConnell (Jake Johnson) as The Pilot. Ex-con and recent bar owner, Grey was able to convert his driving (and frankly, car thieving) ability into piloting a spaceship, mixing a love of danger with a healthy dose of stability and care. He and Dex were lovers, then best friends, and when his own past came back one too many times to haunt him, he left his beloved bar with some regret to jump onboard.
