Watcher's Report #0001 (transcription)
Rupert Giles, Agent X50
Subject: Buffy Summers
Ahem. I am currently in situ in the anticipation that the subject will arrive within the week. Perhaps sooner given the urgency of their egress from their previous location; perhaps later due to the seemingly total lack of structure and organization on the part of either the subject or her guardian parent.
I have taken the opportunity over the past few weeks since I took up the cover post obtained for me, that of "school librarian," to survey the situation and attempt to identify points of geographical vulnerability and invulnerability, in addition to any ancient or recent history that might establish a pattern for the task ahead.
Suffice to say, while my ersatz duties as "librarian" have left me absolutely no time to progress on this research, as yet, I have been able to track the realities of this location, and may I say, it is no surprise that a Hellmouth has gone relatively undetected here. It is, in its seemingly "normal" state, quite hellacious in and of itself. The crowded halls, the mingled smells of sweat and cheap fragrance, the endless prattle. The behemoth cars belching smoke. The relentless, insistent sunshine. Makes one quite long for the damp fog of home, or even the vast but refreshingly barren deserts of my previous postings.
Ah well, needs must. I can only hold out hope that my charge, the disturbingly named "Buffy Summers," will not live down to the image invoked by that moniker, and will prove to be an apt pupil: serious, dedicated, and uninterested in the dreadful behaviors and habits I see around me every day. Perhaps she will even be a scholar with whom I can share my love of the history of our kind, Slayers and Watchers alike. One can only hope.
Ah, my monitor informs me that said charge is nearing my lair, ha ha. I shall file my second report after our first meeting. Signing out now.
