Caught

Night rounds. Thinking on the problems in front of him, Mal heads down to the cargo bay. Suddenly, below, a loud whisper. Enticing. “Aw, come on, Jayne. Don't be scared. Just put your finger here. And here.” Kaylee.

“Uh, okay, but I don’t get where this is headed…ai ya!" Gasps. "Girl, what’re you up to-?”

Bright laughter. “I toldya, just relax. No, don’t pull. Push, push!”

Reacting, not thinking, Mal takes the stairs in twos, and strides round the crates under the walkway. “What the ruttin'-”

Kaylee and Jayne--standing, fully clothed, Merciful Buddha. Box open at their feet, spilling multi-colored little tubes around their boots. Kaylee’s hand on Jayne’s shoulder. Jayne staring down at his hands, two fingers pointing at each other, tugging, connected by…

“Hey, Cap’n!” Kaylee chirps. “We were just checkin' out the cargo, and it said ‘Alliance Finger Puzzles’ so we got curious, and-”

"Never mind him, gorramit! Get me out of this!" Jayne's low growl rises in near panic.

Mal gapes. His mouth tries to form words but nothing emerges. Turns on his heel and up the stairs. Halfway down the passage to the bridge, he bends over, shaking with helpless laughter.

Note (courtesy Wikipedia): The [so-called] Chinese finger trap is a puzzle that traps the victim's fingers in both ends of a small, woven bamboo cylinder. The initial reaction of the victim is to pull the fingers outward, but this only tightens the trap more. "Chinese Finger trap" is also a metaphor for a problem that can be overcome by not trying too hard to solve it.
