David let himself into the house and dropped his backpack near the door. Unlike him, sloppy, but he was so beat from the double shift that he couldn’t bring himself to give a-oh well. He reached down for the backpack and set it on the sideboard like usual, and half staggered toward the dining table. Sinking into a chair, he rested his head in his hands and tried to decide if he was more hungry, sleepy, or dirty, and whether he cared enough to do anything about it. Getting too old for this, he thought to himself. Got the greys to prove it. He shoved his fingers through his hair as if in evidence.
Dimly, he became aware of a pulsing beat and singing from the kitchen.
Next thing he knew, he felt warm hands on his shoulders, and a saucy voice in his ear. “Heyyyy Santa Baby, la-la-la-la-lalala the tree, for me…” Bryan crooned. “You just rest here, and I’ll bring in some supper for you, my boo, la-la-la-la-lalala…” He swooped in for a kiss as David grinned, feeling suddenly better.

Later, feeling full and rested and refreshed after a hot tub, and cradling a glass of merlot, David leaned his shoulder against Bryan’s as they sat and stared into the fire. “Any word from Sawyer? ETA?” he asked lazily-his phone was across the room, and Bryan was squinting at his.
“Yeppers, they just left Santa Barbara.” Bryan punched in a a message and slid the phone onto the coffee table. “If he’s texting, I hope Shania’s driving,” David said, sitting up in alarm. “Yes, yes, lovey, no worries.” Bryan wrapped an arm around David’s shoulder and pulled him back to a slouching position. “Our capable nurse is taking good care of our freshman.”
David leaned back and closed his eyes, smiling. “Mmmm. It’ll be great to see them both. I love the holidays,” he murmured. He looked pensive and gazed around the room. “It’s so quiet these days, it’s just not the same.” He felt a similar wave of exhaustion as he’d had when he first came home, and wondered what was going on with him. “The New Normal,” he said, sadly.
Bryan swigged his wine. “With Goldie, Jack, and Honey arriving tomorrow, we’ll have a houseful, again. It’ll be like old times.” He turned and cracked an eye at his husband. “Which means that if we want to, um, you know, for the next week….” He waggled his eyebrows. “We don’t have much time.”
David looked appraisingly at Bryan. “You mean….” Bryan nodded broadly, eyes wide. David grinned ferociously, and, filled with sudden energy, leapt to his feet, hauled Bryan to standing, and began pulling him toward the bedroom.
