My 5 1/2 year old neutered male kitty has a spot that he scratches to the point of it bleeding. He does it fairly often - every few months or so. When he starts messing with it we try to control it with spraying a soothing anti-irritant spray on the spot and making sure his back nails are trimmed, and sometimes even using softpaws. We've taken him to the vet who gives us antibacterial ointment but that's about all they say they can do, short of running tons of expensive allergy panels. Those methods have worked fine for controlling the symptoms, but we don't know why it keeps happening.
Something occurred to me though, and that is he is microchipped. It's my recollection that the microchip is implanted somewhere around the shoulders on a cat - is that correct? That's where this itchy spot is. But could it be causing the issue? He has had his chip since he was about 8 wks (they put it in when I adopted him) but he started scratching it a few years in. Could something have happened to the chip after it was implanted that is causing him problems?
