i saw the final installment of the Star Wars franchise on Saturday, and here's my take: deeply flawed. one the whole, it was worth my seven dollars, if only beause i can now complain about how terrible the movie was. a few points which were particulalry eggregious:
-Darth Vader's emergence form the operating table, stiffly stumbling, Frankenstein-like forward (he even tears out the restraining manacles. as if this wasn't bad enough (and it's hard to describe how cliched and derivative it is) Vader then, upon learning of his wife's death (and his alleged responsibility) cries out, in perhaps the most disappointingly cliched moments in all film history, "NNNNNNNOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!" arms upraised, camera pulling out. i couldn't make up a scene more unashamedly hackneyed if i tried.
-Anakin's lightning-quick crossover to the Dark Side. now, i know he'd been struggling the last few movies with his darker impulses. but he goes from turning Palpatine in to the Jedi athorities, to (assisting) killing Mace Windu and pledging his loyalty to Palpatine in 5 minutes of movie time. (and probably only one hour of story time) it's so abrubt, and utterly non-sensical as to be preposterous.
-why was Chewbacca even in this one? (to say nothing of R2-D2 and C3PO being in the whole damn series) oh that's right, to sell merchaindise.
this list could go on and on. feel free to add in your own moments of disappointment and disgust.
