Thanks, I certainly want him back. If I find him I'm never letting him out ever again. :(

I really hope you find your kitty soon.

As for the situation, I'd probably contact the authorities.

I am not 100% sure but I think the law in NJ is once the cat has crossed onto another person's property, it is considered a stray.

OP, I hope you get your cat back!

I'm glad I don't live in New Jersey. Because as good as you are about keeping pets contained, shit happens. :/

The same thing happened to me when I was little! I was so mad my mom basically gave my dog away. :/

I'd wonder if maybe the other family had half-adopted him or something. If he's living in their yard/porch or even house for half the day, maybe they feel like they have an emotional claim on him too? Also, I'm pretty sure vet bills do not prove ownership; once the cat leaves your property he is technically a stray.

(If they've actually found him, then clearly the only solution is to place him inside a circle of people and ask him to come to the person he loves the best. Ha.)

I'm sorry you lost him, I hope you find him soon.

Yes! We can get the circle of people together and I'll just stab the other person!

Let me preface by saying I don't have a cat, I have two dogs.

Situations like this are exactly why I microchip my pets. If they escape or if a dispute is brought up much like the one you just stated the simple solution is to take the animal to a veterinarian and have them scan the chip for the owners info.

I hope your kitty comes home soon. If it makes you feel better my sister-in-laws cat disappeared for 4 months and then came home like nothing had happened.

I told the people at Houston Humane that I'm microchipping him as soon as I get my hands on him.

4 months!? That actually does make me feel better. :P
