Involved Part 8

The ring of her cell phone downstairs gradually seeped into Olivia’s consciousness, rousing her from the most comfortable sleep she had enjoyed in ages. The waking up wasn’t so bad either, she mused as Alex’s soft warm body lay half on top of her, her head on Olivia’s shoulder.

“Alex? Baby, I have to get that,” she whispered, easing herself out of bed. It was 2.38am, she noted with mild alarm. Phone calls at 2.38am never meant good news.

Padding down the stairs naked, the phone stopped ringing, clicking over to voice mail. After a quick rummage through the pile of hastily discarded clothing, she found the phone under her jeans and checked the received calls log.

T-Bone had been ringing her. Quickly hitting redial, Olivia pulled her shirt on, and sat down.

“Persephone? That you?” He sounded tense.

“Yes, what’s going on? Is something wrong?” she asked.

“That damn office has security like Fort Knox,” he complained. “We’re going to need McNeill’s security pass and I wanted to see how you were doing with her.”

Olivia was silent for a moment. He really was losing it.
“T-Bone, it’s the middle of the night and you wanted an update? What the hell is wrong with you? I thought someone was hurt!” She didn’t think it would do any harm to let him know how spooked she had felt at his night time call.

“Well I called because I’m sitting outside your apartment right now Persephone, and I can’t see your car,” he said quietly.

Olivia thought quickly. Would revealing her and Alex’s relationship put them in any danger?
“That’s because I’m at Jessica’s,” she said decisively, “and you just interrupted us.”

T-Bone gave a rather dirty laugh, which made Olivia scowl. She hated using this beautiful connection with Alex to keep T-Bone off their backs.

“Persephone, you’re a dark horse.” He said. Olivia could hear him smirking and ground her teeth together to stop herself from saying something she would regret.
“So getting her security card should be a cinch. Hope did a bit of research, all the cards are held at the main desk, and picked up first thing. The workers drop them off in the evenings, so we’ll need to get McNeill’s tomorrow. Take her to lunch and we’ll get it there.”

Olivia thought quickly. They were getting too close to Alex, and she didn’t like it.

“Can’t I just take it?” she asked. “I could lift it when I’m there in the morning.”

“No, we’ll need to copy it and get it back to her. If she alerts security that she’s lost it, they’ll change all the codes and the stolen card won’t work.”

“Copy the card? How on earth are we going to do that?” Olivia asked, knowing the distinctly low-tech approach the group had.

“Jake’s in town tomorrow,” T-Bone revealed. “I called him earlier about it. He knows about these things. Take her to lunch, 12 o’clock at that place you took her the first night, where my buddy saw you.”

“What are you going to do T-Bone?” she asked, trying to get as many details as possible. “Will Jake be there?” The Feds would love to get their hands on someone closely connected to terrorism.

“Just get her and her security card to the restaurant, we’ll take care of the rest,” he replied. “Does she know anything about Holts? Have you asked her yet?”

“No, it’s too soon,” Olivia replied defensively. “She’d know something was up if I mentioned a client of hers.”

“Alright, well we’ll do it our way then. Be there at 12. Oh, and you might have to keep her occupied for a while, so turn on the charm won’t you,” he teased.

Olivia just grunted. She didn’t want Alex involved, and had managed to hide the fact that she was here from Agent Porter, her FBI handler. Olivia knew that the bureau would move Alex away if they thought there was the slightest chance of her being compromised, and they would not be happy that the two of them had met up once again. The revelation of their new, intimate relationship would probably give Agent Hammond a heart attack. But how could she tell Porter about this meet tomorrow without mentioning Alex?

Maybe she could get away with it though. Agent Porter wasn’t involved in the Cabot case, she’d just have to keep him in the dark.

Returning to bed, she slid in and watched Alex, her face relaxed in sleep. She had a rather satisfied smile on her face, and instinctively turned to snuggle into Olivia’s embrace as the detective slipped between the sheets.

“Mmmmm,” she hummed, as she kissed Olivia’s cheek before sliding a hand around her neck, and laying her head on her shoulder.

Olivia looked lovingly at her, gently brushing a few strands of hair from her forehead.
“I’ll keep you safe,” she vowed. “I promise.”
Then after a few more seconds, “I love you.”

Alex shifted a little, tightening her hold and sliding a leg over Olivia’s. “Love you too,” she murmured.

Olivia debated with herself whether to tell Alex about the plan to copy her security card. On the one hand, she didn’t want her involved in any way, but on the other, she might make a fuss if she realised it was missing and screw up T-Bone’s plan.

Olivia was alone in Alex’s offices, going through the deadly dull papers in the Holts Pharmaceuticals case. Alex had a meeting she couldn’t get out of, but had assured her she would be back in time for lunch.

Agent Porter had been quite excited at the news of Jake Rogers arrival in town. He had been under suspicion of involvement in terrorism at the highest level for some time, but they had no hard evidence on him. Because of that, Olivia had been ordered to cooperate with him and T-Bone until there was something they could be tied to.

She hadn’t told him who Jessica McNeill really was, and she hoped that had been the right thing.

She thought of this morning, and the wonderful wake up call Alex had given her. Alex seemed to be very keen to make up for lost time. They must have had a week’s worth of sex in the last 12 hours - not that Olivia was complaining. She hadn’t been able to keep a smile off her face all morning.

There was nothing in the files that appeared to be of any use at all, and she was beginning to think Alex was right, that Holts were innocent and T-Bone’s information was wrong. That probably wasn’t going to go down too well.

A noise at the door alerted her to Alex’s return, but as Cathy was with her as they strolled in, Olivia had to restrain herself from welcoming her back as she would have liked to.

“So Ms Ryan, have you managed to find what you needed while I was gone?” Alex asked with a small smile. She walked over, giving Olivia a hungry look, even licking her lips, much to Olivia’s discomfort. Alex seemed to love teasing her.

“Erm..not really, maybe you can help me.”

“Thanks Cathy, that’ll be all,” Alex tossed over her shoulder, not taking her eyes from Olivia.

Once the door had clicked closed, she leaned over the desk to kiss the detective warmly, but not too passionately. They were in the office after all.

“You need my help detective?” she whispered into Olivia’s ear before pulling back.

Olivia tried to keep her mind on business.
“Yeah Alex, I can’t find a damn thing of any interest in these files. I think you were right about Holts.”

“I didn’t see anything suspicious either,” Alex admitted. “That’s not going to be the result your people are after is it.”

Olivia looked up at her, and then at the papers scattered over the desk. No secrets, she decided.

“Alex, there’s something I need to tell you,” she said seriously. “When we go for lunch today, there’s going to be some sort of operation to steal and copy your security ID card. I don’t know exactly what’s happening, but they are going to break in here, probably tonight.”

Alex sat down, shocked.
“They won’t believe you about the lack of information in these files will they?” she said after a few moments to process what Olivia had said. “Are they going to hold up the place or something?”

“I don’t know,” Olivia replied, frustrated, “but I’ve informed my FBI handler and we’ll be quite safe.” A slight untruth. She had no idea what Porter was going to do, but was pretty sure there wouldn’t be any SWAT teams protecting them.

“Alex, we need to be really careful. Watch names, don’t discuss our real lives. We’ll be watched closely today, they’ll probably be listening to us as well.”

“I get it Liv, I’ll be careful,” Alex replied, looking resolute. “I take it you want me to give up the card, no fuss right?”

“Right. I’m hoping we can just leave them to it. I’m sorry Alex, but there’s no other way but to let them break in here. At least they’ll see that there is no evidence on Holts for themselves.”

Alex didn’t look too happy at her work place being invaded.

“Maybe we better put these files away,” she said looking at the boxes around the room.

Olivia glanced at her watch.
“Shit, it’s 11.50, we need to get moving. We’ll shift them when we get back,” she said, grabbing her jacket.

Olivia stopped in front of a slightly worried looking Alex.

“Hey, don’t worry baby, everything will be ok.” She leaned in for a gentle but lingering kiss. “Come on, let’s go get robbed.”
