The Sorting
It was dark inside the hat. Neville could no longer see or hear the sea of students before him. He could hear nothing but his own quick breathing as he gripped the stool in terror. Was there a house for people who weren’t good at magic? He nearly screamed out loud when he heard the voice in his ear.
“Now, aren’t you an interesting one,” said the small voice.
Am I? Neville thought.
“Oh yes,” the hat responded, with what Neville was sure was a hint of amusement. Oh good. Because being laughed at by a hat was something he really felt had been missing from his life.
The hat, apparently thinking out loud, continued, “Not, I think, a Ravenclaw. And I believe not a Slytherin.”
Neville, who had never considered himself either bright or ambitious, was not surprised by this.
“But loyal, definitely. Perhaps Hufflepuff...”
Neville waited for the hat to call this out. It was obvious, wasn’t it?
“Not as obvious as you might think,” the hat said. “I see great bravery as well as great loyalty. Yes, you’re an interesting one, Mr Longbottom...”
If he hadn’t still been paralysed with fear, Neville might have laughed. Bravery? Him?
As if in answer, an image flashed before Neville’s eyes. For a split second, he saw himself, looking older, bloodied and battered. And in his hands was a sword. He raised the sword over his head, and -
In an instant, the picture was gone.
Was that… me? thought Neville, barely comprehending what he had seen.
“It could be.”
There was a moment’s silence in which his heart raced, and the hat said nothing.
“So unless you’d prefer Hufflepuff...” it said at last.
“Not really, thank you,” Neville whispered.
“Very well,” the hat said. “GRYFFINDOR!”
