So this evening at around 7, to escape the hazardous boredom of what we lovingly refer to as
"the front end"
meaning the cash registers, produce, ee tee cee..
I went outside to get the few carts I could see around the building... then I saw one, alllll the way across the parking lot, by the HSBC BANK! You know how far that is; it's that bank that you go past when you first go up the hill into our 'mall.'
So I got that cart, in the blazing summer heat/humidity, and then I saw one farther to the left, over by the UPS store, by "Fit Lady"(heh)... sort of that area behind the gas station? So I went over, and it was half pushed in these bushes, and the cart was full of leaves like it had been there for weeks - a lot of the leaves were dead and some looked like they had just fallen, pounded down by the rain from a few days earlier. I'd never noticed before, but the trees and bushes there sort of hide an embankment that goes down to a swamp, and I could hear birds warbling and buzzing insects from their little hollow, and as I went to move the cart, a really tiny rabbit ran out from underneath it and down into the marshy area. I wanted to climb down after it and see what it was like down there, in this little haven from the outside strip malls and cars and people and garbage and pollution. It was like this cart from Mother Earth had found its own little secret garden, and it made me sad to take it away. It was so strange and graceful, it was melancholy but it sort of made me happy. I haven't really stopped thinking about it yet.
