Fifteen Hours To Kuwait

May 03, 2007 01:10

I just talked to my cousin's husband, Tex, who was sent over to Iraq late last month. Well, technically, he was sent to Kuwait - Iraq comes later this month. Anyway, I was so thrilled when I saw his name pop up on my MSN Messenger because I didn't get the chance to send him good wishes before he left. He was supposed to still be in the US, but apparently, they moved the departure date up. My mother was the one who broke the news to me and my reaction could be summed up in one word: "Argh!"

We basically talked about the flight and, um, baseball [what?! He started it!] and it made me way too happy. Heh. I dunno, he's just one of the few folks from PR that I actually really talk to - I'm really not talkative at all. I'm the girl who sits in the corner with a book and an iPod, hoping to blend in with the chair that I'm sitting on. But I can chat with him and his wife [my cousin, Ivy] very easily and it rocks.

I really wish he wasn't over there, especially since his 13-month-old baby [who is the cutest thing ever and is nicknamed DJ] is doing fun stuff like trying to learn how to walk and flinging around his need for independence from various big-boobed huggers - you know, the sort of stuff that one parent catches a baby doing and yells at the other parent, "Oh my GOD, he's not using the couch as support! Honey, HE'S NOT USING THE COUCH! BRING THE CAMERA!" and that other parent throws various furniture and people out of his way as he runs and turns on the flash at the same time. Heck, I miss that kid so much and I've only spent a few weeks with him, so I cannot imagine what a father would be going through.

He was, however, allowed to go back to PR to celebrate DJ's first birthday and they threw a huge western-themed party complete with a fake saloon, a cotton candy machine, three cakes with little trains and cowboy stuff connecting them to each other, and a mechanical bull that produced some of the funniest DVD footage in my father's collection. Nobody lasted more than 4 seconds on that thing. Wow, tangent. Anyway, it was good that he went back for that, at least.

He's going to be over there for a little over a year, so when he comes back, there shall be some rushing to get him up to New York City and to Yankee Stadium for a game since 2008 will be the last year that it be up. And I'm fully expecting this to happen since the dude is indestructible. So, yes, 2008: one extended family, one Stadium, a baby's first Derek Jeter jersey, and approximately 5 pounds of crappy and expensive Stadium food - book it.
