IV. Damon Salvatore

Sometimes she wondered if she picked the wrong horse when it came to the Salvatore brothers. She hadn't thought much of Damon in 1864; he was an incredible lover but mindnumbingly romantic, so desperate to love and be loved she had nearly choked on the effort not to roll her eyes.

She hadn't expect 150 years of devoted service. Knowing the lengths he went to in order to free her from the tomb would have been touching if Katherine wanted to be touched. But instead it just made him look desperate and painfully young and Katherine despised both of those qualities in vampires.

When he halted the sex Katherine was hoping they'd be having against the wall, more lovesick platitudes spilling from his lips, Katherine barely managed not to stake him out of pure frustration.

It was too easy to shatter him.

V. Mason Lockwood

She had never cared much for George Lockwood but Katherine liked Mason. He was naive and too trusting but so many human men were. Winning her affections meant so much to him; she was the first woman he had been with since transforming at the full moon.

He confessed this one night in bed, Florida moonlight spilling in through the blinds, and Katherine saw a bit of Stefan in him, in his earnest confession and serious eyes.

She had only one goal when it came to Mason and it was the moonstone. Sometimes she thought he recognized that. Mason only played at being a dumb surfer; like all the Lockwoods, his brain was programmed to expect duplicity and plan how to expose it.

But, like all men, a pretty smile and a roll of her hips could change the topic suddenly.

The night he finally confronted her on only wanting him for the moonstone, she stared at him, unable to keep the boredom from her eyes. She challenged him, taunting him with whether or not he really wanted an answer, and he had back down as she knew who he would.

He slept with his back turned. Katherine assumed it was supposed to telegraph his hurt but it didn't affect her sleep at all.

VI. Nikolas

He always smiled at her when she went into town with her father. The Petrovas always sold the food they grew at the market, and sometimes he was there with his father overseeing what they owned. Nikolas would one day be the most powerful man in her village, which, in Katherine's limited world view, made him king.

One day, as she was walking behind her father, a dog took her out at the knees, sending her tumbling to the dirt. Nikolas had been there, offering his arm and helping her to her feet. Katerina had blushed, discreetly brushing her skirts even as her father thanked him for being so kind. The next day, a man arrived and asked her parents if Katerina would like to accept a servant's position at the house.

Nikolas kissed her sweetly. He spun stories of how life would be when they were married, described the riches she would have and the comfort the Petrovas would know by her increase in station. Katerina believed him wholeheartedly. When he gave her a pretty silver bracelet as a token of engagement, Katerina let him take her maidenhood.

The baby had quickened before Katerina even realized what had happened. And suddenly she was dismissed from the house and Nikolas went abroad and her parents...oh, they would not even look at her because of the shame she had brought.

All that sustained her through the pregnancy was the hope Nikolas would return, casting aside his parents and riding off with Katerina in the night. She knew he loved her, he still wanted to marry her and raise their child together.

But the baby was born and he never came.

As Katerina watched her father disappear with her daughter, she knew unequivocally that Nikolas had never loved her. And so she vowed she would never love again.

Ohhhh, oh, this. I love your portrayal of Katherine, how she shuts her heart away after Nikolas and tears everyone else's apart. And Katherine/Isobel, unf, I love you.

This is wonderful! Your Katherine voice is perfect. I think my favorite section is Stefan. "oh, he was adorable," is just hilarious and spot-on and I love the way she wanted to keep him because he was innocent and amusing. I LOVE her observations on Damon, the "it would have been touching if Katherine wanted to be touched," is perfect. I'm so happy that you included Isobel, I've always been so curious about their interactions (and I want more Katherine/Isobel fic in my life). That last one hurts and makes so much sense. I loved this entire thing :D

Thank you!

I totally agree about Katherine/Isobel. I wish there was much more fic of those two.

I love that we get an insight into the father of Katerina's child. He's rarely, if at all, mentioned in TVD FF and, really, there must be *some* sort of backstory there. And the idea of her love for a man who decided to label their daughter a bastard is a winning idea in the beginning of the creation of Katerina.

I can't believe her baby-daddy doesn't get brought up more. But then again, I'm a lot more interested in human!Katherine than I am in vampire!Katherine, so I probably have put far too much thought into how she would've ended up pregnant.
