I finished Halo 3 on Legendary difficulty this weekend. It's astounding how different the game becomes on Legendary. It requires such different tactics, so much more strategy, and though at times it may seem like a
chore at times, it is very enjoyable.
I think I've said it before and I'll say it again: I enjoyed the story, but I was hoping for more.
I enjoy how the artifact in the trailer is *not* Ark, as everyone was convinced it was. It was like Bungie was leading us on, making us think it was the Ark and then -BLAM!- Gotcha!. I really liked the broken transmissions of Cortana. And I loved their reunion, as you might be able to tell from my
recent screenshots I loved how the ending came full circle with the last level being very similar to (but way better than) the last level of Halo. Cortana's simple, "It's been an honor serving with you, John" was very moving, and though the ending initially infuriated me, I am satisfied with it. MC's last words were intriguing and he goes full circle back into the cryo from whence he came (though on a different ship) in Halo.
So on to the questions. For starters, I should say that I haven't found all the servers. I wasn't looking all that hard. I wanted to get through it on Legendary and I'll go back now for servers, skulls, etc. My curiosity, however, got the better of me and I have read the full text (I think) online. Anyway, here are a couple questions and my initial thoughts.
How did Cortana know about the Portal?
When we left our intrepid AI heroine, she was on High Charity. She says in her recorded message that the Gravemind did not know about the Portal, so it couldn't have been from him. Perhaps she acquired this knowledge during her time on Installation 04? But then why didn't she mention it before? Did she not have time to sift through all the data until she was left alone on High Charity?
What was her 'solution' on the other side of the Portal?
My initial thought is that she knew the flood would travel to the Ark and that she knew a replacement for I04 would be waiting. But since 343GS didn't even know that, how could she have known that? So if what actually happened wasn't her 'solution', then what was?
What was the point of the Forerunner indexing the sentient species? What does that even mean? How does that 'save them'?
It's implied that he humans found on Earth are sent through the Portal to the Ark. Why didn't Librarian go too? How did the humans get back to Earth to repopulate? This whole story component of the original indexing of species and the purge has me confused.
So what do you think of these questions? Any theories? Any additional questions of your own? Also, no, I haven't read all the books yet. I've only read Fall of Reach. If reading the books would help, just say so.
