anyone remember this?

Alright blogosphere, I need help. I'm feeling quite nostalgic today and I have this memory of a cartoon from when I was a kid. I can't remember the name of the cartoon or much of anything about it and it's driving me batty. I don't think it was a regular TV show. I think it was either a cartoon movie shown on Saturday mornings or a mini-series or something.

The main thing I recall about this cartoon was an alien creature that was part of the show. See if you recall this description at all.

He was a small brown furball-like alien.
He may or may not have had three eyes.
He was a very cute, loveable guy, especially in the smile, if I recall correctly.
He had silver-colored apendages - either antannae or limbs.
These silver apendages were very stretchy and flexible, almost amorphous.
He has the pet/sidekick of the main human character of the show/movie.

Then there was this other race of larger aliens, which I think had three limbs. A major plot point near the end was the discovery that this small furball guy was the younger form of these bigger guys. I want to say that near the end the little guy finally grew into one of the bigger guys and because of his bond with the main character, prevented some disaster befalling humanity, but I'm not sure about that last part.

This is driving me bonkers! Whatever this was, I loved it as a kid. Can anyone help me out?
