Jared cursed loudly as he tripped over a box, heavy and solid enough to send him sprawling before it did. He bent down to spin it around, to read the label on the other side; Richard's books.
Jared smiled softly as it sunk into his mind that they were really doing this, moving in together on a total whim. It had been something that they'd talked about, considered at times before, but it wasn't until earlier that morning that they'd really decided to do it. Jared had woken up in Richard's bed, confused to find the other side empty, until he heard the banging and clattering coming from downstairs. Richard had been packing, at six in the morning, dressed and ready to change his whole life, just so Jared wouldn't have to take the long drives to see him. Richard was some kind of wonderful.
The day had been hectic and fast paced, a frenzy of boxing and labeling until late into the night. They didn't bring it all, not yet, anyway. Just enough to make it feel like this was Richard's home. Truth be told, it already had been, for at least a year and a half. The dogs didn't even bark at him anymore, and Jared already considered the left side of his bed to be claimed away from him. But doing this officially, if felt sort of... warm. And warmth was a welcome feeling in contrast to the storm that had been raging outside for the last couple of hours. The rain was coming down thick and heavy, so loud that it almost drowned out the sound of the thunder. The power had gone out about an hour ago, an electric snap as a bolt of lightning tore through the sky. It had come back almost as quickly, but they left everything off anyway, just to keep the feeling.
Jared didn't mind, not so much. He liked nights like this, cold and dark. They were intimate and intriguing, something out of the ordinary. He looked out the window, intent on watching the rain. Richard laughed softly from somewhere behind him, and Jared spun around to find him kneeling on the floor, pulling things out of a box in front of him.
"What are you laughing at?" Jared felt a smile break across his face as Richard's grin infected him.
"So much for helping." Richard rolled his eyes, and Jared put his hands on his hips in mock frustration.
"Hey! I totally brought all of these boxes in by myself while you rolled around with Sadie!" Jared laughed as he crossed the room, dropping down beside Richard with a loud thud. The entire floor was littered with things; boxes, tape, clothes, blankets, and around them was a stack of pillows. Jared still wasn't sure why Richard had so many, but he hadn't complained either way.
"Mmm, I know." Richard leaned against Jared, fitting perfectly against his side. "Thank you." His voice was soft as he tangled his fingers with Jared's on his lap.
"Don't thank me." Jared bent down to press a kiss to Richard's forehead, smiling softly against his skin as he did. "Wait right here?" He questioned as his mind flickered to the fridge in the kitchen. Richard made a noise that was half disappointment and half confirmation.
Jared made the trip quickly, missing Richard's touch the moment he stood up. There had never been a time when Jared doubted that he wanted Richard. He knew it from the moment they first met, back when Sam Winchester's life was simple, and his biggest issue was an alien making some douchebag slow dance under a disco ball. It had taken longer than that for him to work up the nerve to do anything about it though, and that was his only regret.
He returned to the living room to find that Richard had rearranged the pillows into something looking suspiciously like a pillow fort. Jared laughed sharply at the look of pure excitement on Richard's face. Of course he would.
"Ah, a man after my own heart." Richard grinned as his eyes caught the tin of strawberry icing in Jared's hands.
"I thought I had that already?" Jared sunk down beside Richard, still grinning at the pillows surrounding them.
"You know you do." Richard shifted to settle between Jared's legs, leaning back against his chest. Jared felt a rush of sleep hit him as he worked on opening the icing. It'd been a long day, and the rain outside was sort of lulling.
"I forgot to tell you your mom called earlier." Richard's voice was soft and low, signaling that he was getting tired too. "While you were in the shower."
"You're a dick, dude." Jared grinned as he got the can open. "Waiting this long to tell me."
"I forgot." Richard drew out the word, turning back slightly to inflict his puppy eyes on Jared.
Jared replied by dipping his finger into the icing and licking it off of the tip. It shut Richard up awfully fast.
"Did you set the coffee pot?" Jared asked as he wrapped an arm around Richard, letting him suck the rest of the icing off his finger. Richard nodded against his chest as a snap of thunder crashed through the sky.
It was sort of nerve wracking, having Richard finally move in. It was something new and unknown, but Jared wasn't worried. Because Richard was Richard, the definition of perfect. And life was going to be easy. Oh yes, it was.
