I feel kind of embarrassed when I see icons with "Liverpool 4 - 1 Manchester United" written on them, or pictures of the 2-1 scoreboard or whatever. It's like, they've beaten us so many times in recent history. They keep winning trophies. They've equalled our number of league wins. They're catching up to us in the CL. It seems so petty to be clinging to a couple of wins when they have so much to throw back at us. (I hate to say it, but it reminds me of Everton selling DVDs of their 3-0 victory against us.) I mean, sure, I enjoyed those wins as much as the next supporter, but . . . y'know. Until we become more consistent, I think it's a little early to be rubbing it in people's faces. A trophy to show off would be nicer. ;)
I'm still kind of angry at Carra for the whole Arbeloa-hitting incident (I guess that I should point some blame at Arbeloa too, but you know me. I'm all 'Carra started it; Arbeloa was merely retaliating!'). I know everyone else is over it, but it's just yet another example of our innate ~Liverpoolness~ ebbing away a little. We used to be an infinitely classy club. No infighting, no dirty laundry being aired in the papers, no booing by the fans, and certainly no manager-vs-board-vs-owners shit. Until a couple of years ago. I was sort of clinging onto the fact that at least our players are a happy, composed little unit, mais non. The Carra-Arbeloa thing proved me (kinda) wrong. And it breaks my heart.
I can't believe it's been three years since the FA Cup. Fuck, what have we been doing since then? It seems like the better our squad gets, the further we are from winning trophies (correlation, not causation). How that makes any sense at all is beyond me. And as
c0rrine pointed out a while ago, it's a huge ask for our boys to pull off such great results against the mancs and Chelsea for the second season running. Especially if we have post-Confederations-Cup injuries to deal with (omg Fernando, please come home intact).
I'm not annoyed at clubs like Real Madrid for forking out so much money (if you've got it, flaunt it, etc.) but gosh, it makes things harder for Liverpool. Just think, Rafa walked away from signing Dani Alves because Sevilla wanted an extra couple of million. And now you've got tens of millions being splashed around willy-nilly. How do we stand a chance when it comes to people like David Villa? Our ~Spanish connections~ can only get us so far. And dammit, English players (*cough* Glen Johnson! *cough*) are so overpriced. Everyone is overpriced. I remember Fernando Torres defending his transfer fee, saying that no player is worth 20 million, but that that's the way it is. Now 20 million is looking like a veritable steal. But the media's still going to harp on about it, as though we haven't sold half our squad in order to make the occasional (very rare) big signing.
I miss the boys of yesteryear (it's so sad that Sami has now been added to that list). Supporting them felt so much simpler. I was hit with a massive wave of I-miss-Harry-Kewell-and-am-so-sad-that-his-Liverpool-career-died-the-way-it-did
when I went to see Australia vs. Bahrain last week. (He didn't have a great game by his lofty standards but I was still staring at him the whole time; that's him with the ball in the photo, by the way. And a Liverpool fan in the row in front!) And poor little Luis has just dropped off the radar, as have so many ex-Liverpudlians. (Let's not mention Michael Owen lest there be tears.) So, so sad.
*sighs* I feel like I'm coming across as a bad Liverpool fan due to the drudgery of this post, so here's my obligatory YNWA.
