Travel down the road a spell and you'll see this house, sitting in all it's glory in the middle of a field. Owned by a husband and wife, they tended the house and the surrounding land. The husband passed away a few years back and Mrs. Hoosier went on alone, renting the surrounding land to a local farmer to tend. But she was never really alone. Yes, the homes in this are a bit apart, but folks would drop in for a visit on the way to or back from Town. Enjoying some iced tea on the porch and talking about the weather, the harvest, the grandkids. Every visitor bringing joy and companionship to the lady who lived in the great big house all by herself.
I was down in VA last weekend and Mom told me the lady passed away. Within a week or so of her passing, the children (all grown adults) were there having the power lines taken down and the poles removed. As we drove by, they were working to remove the two giant Cedars that flanked the house on either side. My heart sank. Everyone has been trying to figure out what the plan for the property is, but I already know. The next time I'm home, the house will be gone along with the two sheds and the amazing barn out back. In their place will be freshly tilled soil. Or maybe, if I wait a while longer, some soybeans, corn, cotton or tobacco.
Things are always changing, but these are the changes I hate the most.
