It was by happenstance that I watched the beginning of Season 8 at the same time Season 10 began, so it was an interesting experience watching both story arcs unfold simultaneously and with such marked differences in Sam, especially. I could more easily see why S8 Sam didn't look for Dean than I could accept Sam's desertion of Kevin, which I found even more jarring and OOC for Sam's character - the S8 writers were smoking some funny stuff, I think! And Dean is insufferable and unlikable in early S8, too. But by mid-season the writers seemed to recover from whatever binge/bender they were on and the boys got back to being themselves, heee.

Then, in S10, Sam's search for Dean was unrelenting and much more Sam-like. Sam has definitely been on an interesting journey from college kid to confident adult, over the course of the show.

Season 8 Sam is so different, it must've been a little disorienting to watch Season 10 at the same time.

We've seen Sam look for Dean under similar circumstances (In Time after Time, when Dean disappeared in front of his eyes, in almost the same way that Dean did in ep 7.23.) But, Sam didn't assume Dean was dead and walk away. Sam also said that there was no one to turn to...that he was alone. But, he could've called Jody or Garth. And he really didn't need to even do that... in Time after Time, he tried to figure out what happened to Dean... without any help. It was Jody who called him, and volunteered to help Sam. And there was no "rule" about them not looking for each other. Even Bobby said that it was something they ignored. All this, and Sam deserting Kevin (even though Sam spent the last part of 7.23 rescuing Kevin). None of it made sense. The first half of the season, the writers were smoking some funny stuff... yes! The second half of season 8 was so much better.

Then, in S10, Sam's search for Dean was ( ... )

This year's Sam is much more *SAM* to me, and I know how you feel about Season 8. It infuriated me most of all because before Dick Roman went boom, Sam and Dean were on the same level. Okay so Sammy was bonkers and hearing Lucifer, but he and Dean were in it together. Season 8's beginning broke that completely.

Yes, this year's Sam is the real Sam. I had some issues with how they handled Sam's storyline in season 7, but at least Sam and Dean were in it together, as you say. Sam not looking for Dean = the worst storyline ever.

That's a great way to describe it.
It reminds me of the different way he sees the bunker now too - more like his home and not just his place of work. Maybe his goal orientation is changing a bit too.

Thanks.
Oh, that's a very good thing to add... he sees the bunker more like his home now. I'm sure his goals have changed, too. I don't see him checking out colleges online anymore, that's for sure!

You're welcome. Yes, he's accepted the hunting life now, and he's comfortable with that.

Season 8 Sam was so OOC for the Sam we'd come to know, it was like the writers were writing a different character for a while there.

Exactly. The "real" Sam would never behave that way.
