Flowers and Rachel the Pig

May 03, 2024 18:52

Some flower pictures I took this week. And yes the flowers in the first three pics really are that bright! Also Daily Questions, including Rachel the Pig!

And the Daily Questions...

27. Today we celebrate sculptures - are there any places near you with sculptures? Have you a favourite sculpture that you've seen?

Nothing very close by, but my favorite sculpture is downtown and it's Pike Place Market's Rachel the Pig. Rachel was made by NorthWest sculptor Georgia Gerber. Rachel got her name from a real pig who won a prize at the Whidbey Island County Fair back in 1985. At 700 lbs, she weighed more than the statue does! The statue is also a piggy bank, and the money collected is given to charities.

28. Health and safety at work is really important. Have you ever injured yourself at work (or when you were working if you've retired?)

I feel down a flight of stairs once and got bruised, but not badly hurt.

29. William Randolph Hurst, the newspaper publisher was born today in 1863. Do you read a daily or weekend newspaper? Do you read electronically or have an actual physical newspaper?

I get a morning newsletter from the New York Times which has some articles on the day's biggest news.

30. David Thompson, an English explorer and cartographer was born in 1770. He mapped more Canadian territory than anyone else. Have you visited (or do you live) in Canada?

I've been to Niagara Falls and Victoria. I don't remember Niagara Falls very well because I was very young when we went there. As an adult I've been to Victoria three times. The best part of the trip was seeing Butchart Gardens.

May
1. In various countries there is a holiday today (Labor Day in the US, Early May Bank Holiday in the UK). It is also May Day, an ancient pagan festival of spring, rebirth and fertility in many European countries. What are your plans today?

No plans, but it's the day after my birthday and I was born right before midnight, so it's my "almost birthday" and I like that. :)

2. Today is a day to celebrate tuna fish. Do you eat fresh or canned/tinned tuna. If it's in a can, do you buy it in oil, brine or water.

As a kid I loved eating tuna fish. My mom usually bought the kind in oil and she made us the most delicious tuna fish salad sandwiches. Now I'm vegetarian and haven't eaten tuna for a very long time.

3. James Brown was born today in 1933. Known as the Godfather of Soul - can you name one of his songs?

The first song that comes to mind is "I Feel Good".
