I saw these flowers in the park, and wonder what they are... maybe lupines? Does anyone know? So pretty! :)

I don't know the scientific name, but we used to have that plant in my childhood home. My dad called it "red hot poker."

It has long, long leaves. We used to pop them off at the stem, and peeeeeel the fibers apart and braid "thongs" out of the fibers to tie important things to our saddles--um, bike handlebars. Or to tie our "prisoner's" hands behind his back. Another thing they were really really good for was, if you hold the thick end and pop it really quick it makes a snapping noise like a bullwhip. Of course if you do that a half-dozen times it breaks down and you have to go get another leaf and then your dad yells at you for killing his plant, so. You gotta be sneaky, like. *g*
