2B Umpire Dana DeMuth ejected Rays Manager Joe Maddon for arguing an out call made by 1B Umpire Doug Eddings in the top of the 6th inning of the Rays-White Sox game. I'm gonna have to disagree with this one anonymous April 10 2011, 22:32:49 UTC
The matter of the umpires conferring aside, I thought it was pretty clear from the still that they showed that Floyd had the ball while his foot was still on the bag. Maddon didn't even seem to be arguing that point, I think he thought the ball came out before the exchange.

Just like some ejections last year, we have the issue of secure possession and voluntary release. I think Eddings was spot on with his safe call on the field. While umpire consultation is a good thing, I think Eddings had the best shot, he actually got the original call right, and should have upheld it. At least DeMuth got the ejection, it appeared to be DeMuth's screw up.

Eh, to me he's reaching in the glove for the ball and IMO the out call was proper on this play -- proper use of "on the transfer."

I think the issue was more that they changed their call on the field.

Challenge. It looks like Floyd had a foot on the base with the ball in his possession for a good second before he dropped the ball. This seems like enough for an out call.

This ruling has been challenged.

After review, the Quality of Correctness has been overturned. The call is now correct.

Upon initial examination, Floyd did not appear to have secure possession of the ball while in contact with 1st base.

Upon further examination, including examination of the replay and real-time play, the determination of overturning the original Quality of Correctness was made. Upon further consultation of the initial play, it was apparent the called made by Eddings after conferring with the crew was correct. The video of the still frame at the :54-:57 mark shows Floyd had secure possession of the ball and while in contact with 1st base. Secure possession was only lost after Floyd came off the base and on the exchange.

Overturned.

WTF is up with the sunglasses Maddon is wearing...they are hideous, and I think that is why Dana dumped him.
