Chapter 1

“Hyung, come on! Faster!” six-year old Zhou Mi shouts to his older cousin while running along the way. His little body wrapped in a light blue shirt and a navy blue short pants.

A shorter cute little boy is running behind him, trying to catch his steps, “Mimi, Mimi, wait for me!” he yells back. The boy wears a pink sweater with black short pants, adding to the cuteness on his appearance.

The taller kid stops his step and turns his body back, waiting for his cousin to get on his spot, “If we won't hurry, we'll not be able to buy ice cream, Sungmin hyung~” he whines.

Little Sungmin stops beside his younger cousin, hands on his knees and gasping for air, “Geez, Mimi... It’s not like...we're gonna lose them... They have lots...of ice creams...” He says panting.

“But I want to eat them NOW! C'mon!” without mercy Zhoumi pulls his hyung's hand and drags him along the way. Both boys back on their track, running to the ice cream shop.

Zhou Mi and Lee Sungmin are cousins. Sungmin is older by a few months. Their mothers are twins. Sungmin’s mother married a Korean man, while Zhou Mi’s mother married a Chinese man. The Lee and the Zhou family live as neighbors. They bought 2 houses in Incheon that stood right beside each other, so it’ll easier for them to contact and to help each other in times of need. Both kids are the only son, making them very close, they play matches, treat each other as real brothers, best friends, and they are inseparable.

“Two cups of strawberry mix chocolate ice cream, please!” Zhou Mi says cheerfully to the ice cream seller. The ice cream girl gladly handed it to him, “Here's your order, dear. Omo, you two are so cute~” she says, squealing and pinching the boys’ cheeks.

Sungmin and Zhou Mi could only smile in return, giving money and uttering small thank you’s to the nice girl. They walk side by side back to their home, eating the ice cream with big smiles on their faces. Suddenly, a little girl in purple dress comes in their way, a doll in her hand, she runs and bumps into Zhou Mi, causing the latter's ice cream to spill onto his shirt and eventually, to the ground.

“Aaaahhh!!!!” is all what Zhou Mi can say. But his protest doesn’t bother the little girl. She ignores him, and without even say a word she scurried, leaving both boys in daze.

“M… my... ice cream...” the taller boy speaks in a low voice while eyeing his spilled ice cream, a look of disappointment on his face. He reaches for his pocket, trying to find some money to buy another one but to no avail. He frowns, tears started to form on his eyes.

Seeing his cousin’s frustration, Sungmin quickly hands his ice cream to him, “Mimi, don’t be sad, you can have mine.”

“But what about you, hyung?” Zhou Mi looks at the ice cream and then at his cousin.

“It’s okay. We can buy another next time, right?” Sungmin says as he smiles and winks cutely.

Zhou Mi grins in happiness, he kiss his hyung’s right cheek and says, “Thank you Sungminnie hyung~ you’re the best!”

“Eew, it’s sticky, Mimi!” Sungmin rubs his right cheek with his palms.

Zhou Mi keeps grinning while licking his ice cream, “Let’s go home!” he takes his hyung’s hand in his. They walk home with joyful mood.

Sungmin is always there for Zhou Mi, he takes care of him, accompanies him, and protects him. Sungmin is willing to give whatever he has to make his younger cousin happy. Without him knowing, Sungmin has always been Zhou Mi’s guardian angel since childhood.

Twinkle, twinkle, little star, how I wonder what you are

Seven-year old Zhou Mi sings melodiously, soon his cousin joins him to sing the rest of the song.

Up above the world so high, like a diamond in the sky
Twinkle, twinkle, little star, how I wonder what you are

“Min hyung, do you believe in angels?” Zhou Mi asks his cousin absentmindedly. He gazes at the beautiful night sky, decorated by millions of shining stars. It is a holiday, so Zhou Mi decided to sleep over at his hyung’s house. They are lying on a bed and both wore a pair of bunny motif pajama.

“Why do you ask that?” Sungmin turns, facing Zhou Mi.

The younger smiles, “I hear that every person has his own guardian angel - an angel that always keeps us from troubles and assists us. I want to see them.”

Sungmin giggles and pokes his cousin’s forehead, “Silly! We won’t be able to look at them, not if we are still on earth. They are heaven’s creatures, we will see them if we reach the heaven one day.”

Zhou Mi averts his gaze to his cousin, “But I want to see them,” he wishes in his childish tone.

“I have an idea,” Sungmin smiles. “I’ll be your guardian angel, and you can be mine. We will protect and help each other.”

“That sounds good,” Zhou Mi shoves his pinky finger in front of Sungmin’s face, “Pinky promise?”

“Pinky promise,” Sungmin entwines his pinky finger with Zhou Mi’s.

“Now let’s go to sleep,” Sungmin ends his words with a yawn. Zhou Mi obeyed him and snuggled to the older boy. Sungmin wraps his arm around him, cuddles him to sleep. They welcomed the dream world with smile on their faces.

“Hyung, I’m scared....” nine-year old Zhou Mi puffs his cheeks and pouts to his cousin.

“You won’t be able to ride it if you don’t want to learn. Come on, Mimi, give it a try!” Sungmin says wisely while holding the bicycle. They are in a nearby park one evening, just a few yards away from their homes.

“What if I fall? What if I get hurt? What if my knees bleed? What if my hands get wounded?” the younger boy crosses his hands in front of his chest, playing his stubborn side.

The older boy pats his shoulder gently, “I’m here, Mimi. Don’t you trust me? I’ll help you.”

Zhou Mi sighs, “Okay...” The said boy then climbs up the bicycle. He placed his feet on the pedals and his hands on the handle-bar.

“You still remember the steps that I’ve told you, right? Remember to keep your balance, okay? I’ll still hold you on your first paddles and after that I’ll let you go,” Sungmin instructs him gently.

Zhou Mi nods and takes a deep breath, he starts to paddle the bicycle slowly, with Sungmin still holds his seat from behind. A few more paddles and Sungmin let go. Zhou Mi keeps his balance, and finally, succeeded in riding the bicycle.

“Minnie hyung, I can ride it!” he shouts while smiling, “I can ride it! I can... Aaaahhh...” before he could finish his sentences, he lost his concentration fell from the bike.

Sungmin hurriedly runs to his cousin’s side and helps him to stand up, “Mimi, are you alright?”

Zhou Mi scowls in response, “It hurts! I told you I would fall.”

Sungmin chuckles and ruffles the younger’s hair, “No pain, no gain, my dear but at least you had succeeded to ride it on the first few paddles.”

Zhou Mi sticks out his tongue. The older smile and wraps his arm around the other’s shoulder, “Let’s try it again, okay? I believe this time you can do it smoothly!”

The two boys continue their effort, filling the evening air with laughter.

♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫

A tall young man grumbles in front of his locker, “Where is that book?” he keeps looking inside the messy compartment only to get nothing in return.

“Don’t tell me I left it at home! Oh, you are such a genius man, Zhou Mi!” he complains to himself.

Just then, something hit his head.

“Ouch!” he scratched the back of his head, and then turned around.

“Hyung, what was that for?” he says in annoyance.

“Is that all you can say to your hyung who brings you the thing you’re desperately looking for?” a shorter but cuter young man waves the book in front of his face, “You left it at home, silly.”

Zhou Mi immediately changes his expression. He takes he book and hugs his hyung tight, “Sungminnie hyung~ Thaaaaannkkk yooouuuu.... You know I love you the most!”

“Aish, for a 19-year old man, you are such a careless and reckless person, Mimi!” Sungmin nags.

“But I’m lucky to have you~” the taller man sing songs.

Before Sungmin could answer more, the bell rings, signaling the classes will start soon.

“I’ve to go now, Min hyung, don’t wanna be late for my class. See ya later!” he gives farewell to the shorter man and runs his way.

Sungmin smiles as he walks to his own class, feeling relieve every time he could help his beloved cousin. Sungmin and Zhou Mi were always together, they went to the same kindergarten, same elementary school, same junior high school, and same high school. They also entered the same university in Seoul, leaving their families in Incheon. They live together and rented an apartment with two bedrooms. They have each other, that’s all they need to survive in the new neighborhood of Seoul.

♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫

“Hyung, you look pale lately. I think you should go to the doctor,” Zhou Mi uttered. He is standing across his hyung who is sitting on the couch, facing him.

“No, I’m fine. Don’t worry. It’s just because I feel tired…” Sungmin trails off. He ignores his cousin and concentrates on playing his guitar.

By the age of 24, Zhou Mi and Sungmin have finished their studies. Zhou Mi is working as an accountant now and Sungmin got a job as a music teacher. They still live together though.

“Min Hyung, I’m serious.”

“Me too~”

“Sungmin!” Zhou Mi speaks in death tone and glares at the older. He never calls his hyung by his name except when he is angry, “It is no joke. Look at yourself, you’re losing your appetite, you’re getting thinner, and all of your friends tell me that you seem to be weak all the time. It’s freaking me out, you know?”

Sungmin shocks at the younger’s action. He realizes that he was wrong. The other man is worried about his health, yet he pays no attention to him. He puts his guitar down and walk to his cousin’s side, “I’m sorry,” he hugs the taller man by his waist, “I’ll go to see the doctor tomorrow.”

The simple touch of Sungmin never fails to calm him down. Whenever he feels sad, worried, or angry, Sungmin’s touch is the one that could relax him. Zhou Mi let out a sigh and hugs him back, “I’m sorry hyung, and I didn’t mean to be rude. It’s just… I don’t want anything bad to happen to you…”

Sungmin smiles into Zhou Mi’s chest, he feels grateful of his cousin’s care, “I’ll be just fine, you silly. Don’t hurt yourself.”

“I’ll accompany you tomorrow, okay?”

“No, you don’t need to. You have to go for your work. I’m a big man, I can walk by myself,” Sungmin loosen his grip and looks at the younger with pleading eyes.

Zhou Mi gives up, he knows he couldn’t beat his hyung’s aegyo this time, “Okay, but promise me that you’ll call me if you need something, okay?”

“I will,” he replies and grins at the other.

♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫

Sungmin waits patiently on his seat in Seoul Hospital. He glances at the white door that leads to the doctor’s examination room once in a while, hoping the nurse to call his name soon. The door has a sign “Dr. Jung Yunho”, hanging nicely on it.

Sungmin was absorbed with the music playing in his ears and his eyes were travelling around, when suddenly a tall figure in white suit catches his attention. Maybe it’s because his nice body- lean but well-built with pale skin. Sungmin can see some muscles behind his white uniform. Or maybe it’s because of his handsome feature, oval face with sharp nose, full lips, dark chocolate orbs, and a little messy dark brown hair. Sungmin guessed that the man’s age is around his, his young appearance added a fresh aura of the said person. Sungmin observes him in awe, his eyes never leaves the charming man, from the beginning when he entered on Sungmin’s right side, walking on confident steps, till he disappears in the sea of patients on Sungmin’s left.

Who is he? Is he a doctor? Is he working here? Sungmin can’t stop his mind thinking about the man.

Only when the nurse had called his name for the third time did Sungmin regains his senses. He comes in to the examination room, sits in front of the doctor and tells the doctor his grievances. Dr. Jung examines him, checks his temperature, heartbeat, blood pressure, and other general things.

“Well, Mr. Lee, I don’t find any problems on your body yet. I suggest you to do some intensive checkup which involve laboratory test. I’ll give you the schedule of your medical checkup here,” Dr. Jung informs his patient as he writes down some notes and prescription.

“No need to be worry. I hope the test result will be good. Don’t be stressed, it will give bad influence on your body. Please take good care of yourself, have enough rest and sleep. I’ll give you some vitamins to strengthen your body, you can take them on the pharmacy section,” Dr. Jung says gently to Sungmin and hands him the notes and prescription, smiling gently at Sungmin.

“Thank you very much Dr. Jung. I promise you to take care of myself and take the medical checkup on the scheduled time,” Sungmin smiles back, he gets up from his seat, gives the doctor a slight bow and steps out from the room.

Sungmin drags himself to the pharmacy section. He starts to feel hungry, his stomach is making a voice of protest. Why did I skip my breakfast?

And just at that hungry state, Sungmin’s disease decide to show up its’ symptom. His body feels weak, slowly fatigue develop in every part of him. Sungmin trembles, his vision gets blurry, he tries to find something to hold on so he won’t fall. And on that unlucky situation, he bumps to a tall figure in white uniform.

“Aaaahhh... I’m sorry sir, I’m so sorry...”

♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫

Cho Kyuhyun is a nice, kindhearted man. He has a high social care towards sick people that leads him to become a clinical pharmacist, one of professions that need high dedication and laboring on a hospital. His work is not only about preparing the medicines based on the prescriptions, but also giving the doctors some suggestions about which drugs are suited to patients with certain conditions, which drugs can be given to patients with complicated diseases, and so on.

That day, Kyuhyun does his works at usual. He checks for drugs and clinical supplies at the pharmacy section, writes down the name of some decreased items. Then he continue his works helping pharmacy assistants to prepare the drugs, giving patients their medicines based on their prescriptions, and telling the patients how to consume the medicines properly. In the middle of his work, his eyes catch a glimpse of a trembling man, trying hard to hold on a wall to keep his balance. Kyuhyun rushes to the man’s spot, wanting to help the poor man. When Kyuhyun approaches him, the poor man loses his balance and bumps into him.

“Aaaahhh... I’m sorry sir, I’m so sorry...” the poor man apologizes weakly.

“It’s okay. Let me help you to sit,” Kyuhyun supports the man and brings him to the nearby chair.

“Thank you...” the man whispers as he smiles sweetly.

“Never mind, it’s my job after all,” Kyuhyun smiles back, this time he can see the man’s face clearly. He is mesmerized by what he saw. The young man beside him has an angelic face. Even with his pale face, Kyuhyun can see his big round eyes, perfect nose, and pouty kissable lips that make him even cuter.

How can a man have such a cute and beautiful face like this? His mind speaks quietly.

“Uumm... Sir?” the man’s words snap Kyuhyun into reality.

“Oh, I’m sorry. So... What is your name? And... what are you doing here?” Kyuhyun stutters. He mentally palmed his face for acting weird.

“I’m Sungmin, Lee Sungmin,” Sungmin let out his hand, signaling Kyuhyun to take it.

“Mine’s Kyuhyun, Cho Kyuhyun,” Kyuhyun shakes their hands together.

“Ah yes, I’m here to take my prescription...” Sungmin reaches for his pocket and let out a small paper.

“Let me take it for you,” Kyuhyun takes the small paper from Sungmin’s hand.

“But...but...” Sungmin tries to take back the prescription, he doesn’t want to troubled the nice guy.

“Please let me take care of this. I don’t want to see you faint just because you stood up too long waiting for your medicine to be ready. Please wait here, Sungmin-shii,” Kyuhyun says politely and smiles to him.

Sungmin blushes a little for the kind action, “O-okay...”

Kyuhyun comes back after a few minutes, a small plastic bag on his left hand and a cup of warm tea on his right hand, “Here is your medicine, Sungmin-shii, and please drink this, your face is still pale.”

“Thank you...” Sungmin drinks the tea slowly.

“Feeling better now?”

Sungmin nods, “Yeah, thanks to you…”

“You are welcome,”

“So, you work here, Kyuhyun shii?”

“Yes.”

“Are you a doctor?”

Kyuhyun shakes his head.

“A nurse?”

Kyuhyun shakes his head again. Sungmin give a confuse expresion. Kyuhyun chuckles seeing the young man beside him making a cute face, “I’m a pharmacist.”

“A pharmacist?”

Kyuhyun giggles. He doesn’t seemed offended even if the other man seems to know nothing about his job, “Yes, a pharmacist - the one working at the pharmacy section, dealing with drugs, medicines, and other clinical supplies.”

The sentences make Sungmin embarrassed of his own action, not knowing the handsome man’s job. Kyuhyun sees his expression, “It’s okay Sungmin shii. Not many people know about it either,” Kyuhyun pats the other’s shoulder gently. The humble attitude makes Sungmin’s admiration grow more.

“Pardon me for my curiosity, but did you skip your meal?”

Sungmin nods in guilty.

“Well, since it’s lunch time, let’s eat. Hope you don’t mind to accompany me at the canteen”

“B-but…” Sungmin startles with the sudden invitation.

“No buts. I won’t let you go home with an empty stomach. My treat. Come on!” and with that Sungmin can’t disagree more. He let himself to be dragged by the handsome pharmacist that he just met. He spends the lunch time in happiness, and walks home in joy.

♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫

When Sungmin reaches his apartement, Zhou Mi is already there, sitting on the couch and watching TV. Sungmin throws himself on the couch, beside his cousin. He let his body to relax, let out his tiredness.

“Hyung, how was the checkup? What did the doctor say?” Zhou Mi asks in concern.

Sungmin doesn’t answer his question. He just closes his eyes, sighs, and smiles. His mind is wandering to the nice guy he met at the hospital. Zhou Mi took the clue as a good sign.

“Aaah.. Seems like something good happened to you there...” the younger teases.

Still, Sungmin doesn’t reply his cousin’s statement. Instead, he grins like an idiot with his eyes still shut, “Mimi?”

“Umm?” he makes a sound of acknowledgement.

Sungmin opens his eyes, looking at the white ceiling, “Is it possible, to fall in love at the first sight?”
