I read an article once about a man who an avid walker and was well know and loved around the path that he chose to walk each day. At some point he got cancer and spent some time recovering. Walking became exhausting. The neighbors along his path decided to help him by each putting a chair in their yard right beside the sidewalk. It allowed him the freedom to walk and the freedom to rest.
That's what friends do and that's how friends are.
Walking down the path of life can be so exhausting. We pickup burdens along the way that become so heavy. But If you are blessed with good friends then every once in awhile you get to see them or talk to them. Friends become your chairs. A soft place along a difficult path. A place where you can sit down, kick up your feet and be restored.
I lost a friend this month. The thing I asked for to remember her by was a chair. it's the chair I sat in for years and years when I would go visit her. It brings me comfort now to just sit in it. My house is small, and it doesn't quite fit in but I plan on finding rest in it for years to come.
Heather and Julie are my chairs. One day when I was sad, I caught them in my yard with a handful of paper butterflies and some string. They were going to butterfly my yard. Each butterfly had a passage of love and inspiration written on its wing. I now pray those passages for them.
Sharon and Donna are my chairs. I teach with them. Whenever we gather we pour our hearts out and praise God. Today my Sharon needs a chair. She lost a dear friend suddenly. So sometime today grab a chair and pray for her. God knows the circumstance.
Thank God for Chairs.
Proverbs 17:17A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.
