39 and Counting

I stumbled upon this list today on one of the publishing blogs that I read: 1001 Books to Read Before You Die.

I'm somewhat ashamed to say that I've only read approximately 39... give or take a book or two in case I skimmed too quickly.

I think that I always got the teachers who wanted to teach something "a little different." I've read quite a few of the authors on the list, but not always the books that were on the list.

Anyway... lists are subjective based on the list maker and there are some books that I can't believe aren't there, but I found this one an interesting read through anyway. And it had more than just literary cannon on there -- there was a representation of genre-work, as well. Not a big representation, but some. Maybe I'll refer back to it after busy season when I have time to read again. :-)

I have to say, though, if I were making a list of books to read before you die, I think I would have to limit it to one book from each author on the list ... or, at the max, one short series (e.g., The Song of the Lioness series by Tamora Pierce, but then The Circle Opens series couldn't be included).

Oh, and I can't believe that Day of the Triffids is on that list. I saw that movie, and it was one of the worst things ever -- a crazy disaster movie. It never would have occured to me that it came from a book. It actually makes me want to check it out, LOL!
