Sleeping is not for sissies, and other thoughts from my weekend as a hermit

Thursday:
Jeff and I went to see Enchanted on Thursday night.  It was sweet, romantic, funny, tongue-in-cheek, and absolutely worth the price of admission (says the girl that didn’t pay).

It was much more humorous than I expected, and bless the trailer makers who didn’t feel compelled to show all the best parts in the previews.  Amy Adams was hilarious as a misplaced Disney heroine, complete with, singing, ridiculous frocks, an overly sunny disposition, and oh so dainty hand movements.  James Marsden was terrific as the clueless, yet loveable fairy-tale prince.  (And yay to his agent for helping him get this role.  I’d grown tired of seeing him play the impossibly good and earnest guy that ends up getting kicked in the pants (evidence - his roles in The Notebook, X-Men, and Superman Returns).  This film and his role as Corny Collins in Hairspray prove he has great comedic timing.)   And bonus!  I had no idea that Idina Menzel of Rent and Wicked fame (on Broadway) was part of the cast.  Unfortunately she didn’t have any singing parts, but oh well, you can’t have everything.

Friday:
I took Friday off from work with the intention of going to visit Gramma while my parents were there.  Unfortunately, the weather was not cooperative as the newscasters had dire predictions for Saturday’s forecast.  I kept trying to convince myself that it would be fine - I was traveling on Friday and Sunday - I’d avoid the weather.  I packed, I showered, I gave Chloe extra hugs and kisses to make up for her time without me, and made plans to meet Mom and Dad at a restaurant in Illinois.  The whole time, I kept hearing a little voice in my head saying it was a Bad Idea (yes, with capital letters).  I was reasonably sure the weather in Des Moines would be okay by Sunday, but I wasn’t as confident things would be cleared up in the eastern half of the state for my return trip.  I ended up wimping out and staying home.

It turns out the little voice was very wise, indeed, as I had some stomach issues in the early evening that would have been a traveling nightmare.  Thank goodness for gut instincts. (Sorry, I know, bad pun.)  I must have had a bit of a bug because I fell asleep on the couch before 10:00.  Unfortunately, I pulled a muscle in my neck and it’s still tweaking at me today.  I mean, honestly, a sleeping injury!  I wonder if these things only happen to me.

Friday afternoon was very productive, though, as I managed to finish buying gifts for a few people on my list.  I’m doing really well with my Christmas list this year, and I think I’ll actually have wrapped gifts under the tree within the next week, or so.

Saturday & Sunday:

I holed up in my apartment for the entire weekend and played hermit.

I

read Dean Koontz’s newest release The Darkest Evening of the Year, a story about a woman that rescues Golden Retrievers.  It was quite enjoyable, and very bittersweet, considering the author’s recent loss of his own beloved Golden, Trixie.  It’s hard to describe, but Mr. Koontz’s obvious love for Trixie and his willingness to share stories about her made me feel, just a little bit, like she was my dog, too.  So good book, but tinged with a bit of melancholy.

I also read Nora Robert’s latest release Blood Brothers.  Nora’s vampire series didn’t do terribly much for me, but this series has a great deal of potential.  Honestly, this is the best book I’ve read by Nora for awhile. There are some seriously creepy moments, and the main characters were likeable AND had some good chemistry.  This book is very much a page turner, and I stayed up waaaaaay too late on Sunday reading.

Monday and today:
Not much going on, so far.  I’m feeling very hormonal, and very much the Drama Queen.  Rather than whining on and on, I’ll just say that I hope the week gets a little better.

I think I'll be buying BSG's Razor on DVD if it's not too expensive.  I had started a running diary of my thoughts while I watched, but people kept calling me during the second half.  I'll finish writing up the second half and post it when I'm done.

Monday's highlight had to be Chuck.  It's probably my favorite show (except for Battlestar, of course). :)

gramma, daily life, book reviews, squee, movies, weather, recommendations, battlestar galactica, family, lazy weekends
