Meta post, so I’ll write most of it under a cut, for those who rightfully will want to skip it entirely.
The subject is: shipping. Being a slasher, a shipper or a chemistry-chaser.
I rank myself among the latters. I know that all of you know me as a die-hard Danny/Martin slasher, and I won’t ever change my mind about them, but I have something to add about the overall subject.
WARNING: some spoilers about NCIS Season 4 and Cold case Season 5.
I always had a thing for male pairings and friendships, far before knowing the meaning of the word ‘slash’.
I was a teen-ager when I fell in love with a boy in my group. He’d play the guitar together with his very close friend and they were both very goodlooking, famous in the group, loved by all of us. Each one of us was in love with one of the two. It wasn’t a matter of ‘Which guy do you like in our group?’, but ‘Do you fancy Silvio or Stefano?’
In TV shows it was more or less the same. In UFO when I was a child, in Star Wars and Han and Luke, then in all of my favourite TV shows, I’d always look for the male pairing, landing, in the nineties, to ship Doug Ross and Mark Greene and, when I first watched WaT, to have a crush over Danny/Martin even before falling for Danny alone.
I wasn’t a full slasher, yet, as I hadn’t ever thought of the romantic/passionate/sexual side of it, but focusing only about a close friendship.
Attending the web, that came. But… Tired to read me already? My meta follows.
My center is the man I love. Whether he’s alone, in a male relationship or in a het love story, it’s him that I watch. His partner is more an extra than half of the couple. Martin is a little exception, but still I confess, for the few who didn’t know, that Danny is more important than Martin in my imagination.
So, I’m NOT a shipper. I don’t see a cute couple and think about the two of them. I see a cute man and I figure how he would be in sex or love affair with someone he has chemistry with.
CHEMISTRY. No matter if it’s het or gay, I want to see chemistry.
I only moderately stick to canon. I don’t go too far from it, as far as I need to make up a chemistry that is not there, but I can easily imagine a relationship that is not happening in canon, if I think it’s the right one.
I’ll make a few examples about shows that I know and watch:
Without a trace:
Danny and Martin have the best and the deepest of chemistries. I know, WaT deteriorated with the going of the seasons, but the few times we still see them, the screen explodes with their male power.
NCIS:
I watched as far as Season 4 went, so I can’t talk about S5, okay?
My fave man is Tony Dinozzo. My other idol is Mark Harmon, so Gibbs in NCIS. I think they are both gorgeous.
But I don't see the chemistry. I see they are one commanding the other, and as a matter of fact the few fics I brought myself to read are sado-masochistic. I prefer equality.
So, I'm not a shipper, but I was very happy to see and hear the scenes and the dialogues between Tony and Zeva. I see them together, I see the chemistry. I'd be glad if they hooked up together.
Second choice, at the beginning of season 4 I was quite caught by the new situation betwen Tony and his boss, Jen. I don't like her so much, physically talking, but I could foresee a hot, burning romance and sex-affair. It didn't happen and they lamely hooked Tony up with some blank, unexpressive , random girl. They want to hook us to the fact that maybe (I didn’t see S5!!!) Tony wants to settle down. Boring, I hope that in S5 (but do not spoil me, please) something is happening against it.
COLD CASE:
Another show with a good het-pairing, IMO, is Cold Case and Lilly/Scotty. There are a lot of Scotty/Vera shashers, but... seriously! Have I to go on listing why I can't see them together? On the contrary, Scotty's sex-appeal grows to me when he's with Lilly, who should stop hanging up with the wrong men.
I watched CC season 5 to episode 6, so I’m missing the latest three ones (don’t spoil me!). Now I know that he’s having an affair with the redhaired chief… judge, whatever! I like this couple because I can see passion and hotness between them. Het, but with chemistry and attraction. It sounds good to me.
So, slasher? Most of the times so, but I wouldn’t pair anybody just because they are men/men.
Shipper? Never! Even when I see witty dialogues and good female characters I enjoy the scenes and fancy the MAN in the couple.
Now it’s your turn.
I’m sure I forgot many of the points I could make, but what I wanted was to share my thoughts and to read your POV, as I know that in my flist there are both slashers, shippers and chemistry-chasers.
