Really, it was just a teleportation spell and it wasn't like he hadn't done it a million (okay, not a million, but a bunch) of times before. Just picture what you want in your head and do it. Everyone was tired from the fight and it wasn't like he had much to complain about. He was just as dirty and bruised and bloody as the rest of the team and he ( Read more... )

If Billy ventures into the library, he might spy a pretty girl in a blue sleeveless dress over a white blouse, like something out of a Jane Austen movie, except that she's currently nose-deep in a volume of Bram Stoker (from a later period, yes, but she was directed toward it by a young historian). She's rather curled up in her chair and very absorbed, but she's quite interruptible.

Okay, now he's lost. Billy frowns and tightens his grip on his messenger bag strap.

"Left at the huge vase and a right at that wall thing... or was I supposed to go left? No, right..." He's talking softly to himself as he starts to walk the stacks, curiosity getting the better of him and he blushes when he realizes he's not totally alone in the library.

She's lost in the misty woods of Transylvania, and likely misses his murmur, but she does lift her head a bit as she turns over a page. Was that sound the wind in her imagination or a voice nearby...??

Well, she's not yelling at him to shut up or anything, so Billy's going to just play it cool. Yeah, he's totally not some weirdo that talks to himself all the time and is just here looking at the books.

"Oh wow." So much for playing it cool. "The color edition of House of Leaves..."

She might jolt a bit and she looks up from her book. "Oh, hello there, I did not see you there before," she says. " I was rather wrapped up in my book," she adds, holding up a leather-bound copy of Bram Stoker's "Dracula".

Billy looks up from the large book he's just pulled down and offers her a smile that brightens when he sees the book she's got.

"Oh! I love that book! Can't go wrong with the classics."

"It is a wonderfully horrid tale," she says, beaming. "I am reading through again, after reading it once.

"But where are my manners: I'm Catherine Morland, formerly of Fullerton. And you might be?"

"Oops, sorry. I'm William. Or Billy. Billy Kaplan. It's nice to meet you." And you're in luck! Billy hasn't read a Jane Austin novel ever. Not his thing really.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Mister Kaplan," she says. "Are you newly arrived here at the Mansion of Mysteries?"

"Just Billy and... wait. The Mansion of Mysteries? Is that what's it's called?"

"It does not seem to have a name of it's own," she says. "But I gave it that name and it fits it well: it is a very mysterious place."

"Yeah, I guess that does work..." He looks around at all the books again.

"It is pretty weird."

She glances around, then leans in and in an almost conspiratorial voice, says, "I've not seen any sign of it, but I am told that there is magic in this place."

Billy blinks and looks over at her. Why does everyone keep bringing up magic around him?

"Really? Well... I guess there'd have to be, right?"

"It certainly *looks* like a place where magic would be found behind every rock and every tree and in every plank of the building," she says. "I believe that I came here by magic: I was on the road to the city of Bath, when I came here. I was having a day dream that highwaymen had surrounded our coach, when the dream seemed to come true and I escaped into the forest here. A kind Elven lady in white took me and I have dwelt here since."

Billy thought about that. "Huh... That's a pretty intense daydream. Was there anybody here that you knew?"
