Feb 04, 2011 00:12

Riku has fond memories of Setsuban or the Lunar New Year, and given the number of Chinese immigrants in their neighborhood, his dad had offered a double celebration at Omoro. And so, as part of continuing to give back to the Mansion and the people in it, he's spent the past day cooking up a buffet of Asian delicacies, including Chinese dumplings ( Read more... )

Berger wanders in, and after spotting the chanting boy, Berger joins in the dancing and chanting with much enthusiasm.

"Bad spirits out! Good luck in!"

Riku doesn't pause in his pot-banging and dancing, but he does look up at the guy who's just joined in the fun. "Gong hey fat choy," he says. "That's 'Congratulations and be prosperous', in Chinese."

"Gong hey fat choy," Berger chants too, though his accent is positively horrendous. "Hey, what year's it?"

Riku smiles up at Berger, trying not to giggle at his wonky accent. "Oh, it's the Year of the Rabbit," he says. "It's a very lucky year."

"Ooooh, right, Chinese astrology. I completely lost track, didn't I?" He chuckles - and it's a good thing that Berger lost track, because if he counted, he would realize that... it probably shouldn't be the year of the rabbit. Hm.

Don't have an exactly year in the movie or the musical, so I'm going with the debut year (1967) + 2 for his canon... and 1969 is the year of the Rooster. XD

"It's okay: sometimes I have a little trouble remembering them all. We have something like it in Japan, with the same animals," he says. "I was born in the year of the Ox, so that means I'm strong and reliable and a good worker. Well, I try to be," he adds with a laugh.

Hee, that works for me!

"You look like it," Berger replies. "I hope you don't work too much - it's important to have some fun too!"

"Oh, no, I'm careful to let myself have some fun, too," he says, laughing gently. "I like to read and I've been looking around in the attic for a cello: I was starting to learn how to play before I came here, so I thought I'd take it up again."

"Oooh, a musician. Rad," Berger exclaims, and he smackes Riku on the back. "That's awesome, man. What'd you play?"

"Well, I was only getting started, so I really wasn't ready to play anything," he says. "Haji, my sister Saya's friend, used to play this really pretty classical piece that I'd like to learn someday."

"Hey, I bet you can learn fast enough," Berger replies, grinning. "Can you sing?"

"Only a little," he says, blushing just a bit. "I don't think I'm very good at it, but I try my best."

"As long as it comes from the heart," Berger replies. "It's the only thing that matters."

He grins, though there is still a slightly sad quality to it. "That's what really matters, doesn't it?" he says.

"Yeah," Berger replies. "It really is." He reaches to gently fuzz the boy's hair. "What's up, kiddo?"

He giggles, liking this guy already: he's a lot like Lewis, one of Saya's handlers, only lighter-skinned and a lot slimmer. "Oh, I'm up to a lot of things: I'm reading and studying and cooking things to share with people and I'm learning some self-defense stuff. But I'm pretty much just enjoying myself, I guess you'd say."
