Zhane has had a great time keeping his ' promise' to Wolfram. In fact, he's never been so amused - after some work (and this is why it took so long to happen), he's finally managed to work out a sign that reads exactly what he wants it to read.

It's pink.  It's in blinking lights. It's absolutely obnoxious. It's also in the common room.

We offer our ( Read more... )

Murata walks in and sees the sign. Reading it with a thoughtful expression he then grins to himself and wouldn't be surprised to find out this was about Wolfram. He knows very well how the blond is.

A girl in an old-fashioned gown comes up behind him. She's gotten used to the lights that burn without a flame, but she's never seen them do this. And the sight is enough to make her back away in fear. "Is it... supposed to do that?" she asks. "Is it a spell?"

Murata turns his head to look at her. One glance up and down to her dress is enough to tell him what she's frightened about.

"It's all right... It's just technology. I'm going to guess that you're from before the 1800's..." His voice is calming.

"Yes, the year of Our Lord 1799," she says. "I am Catherine Morland, of Fullerton." She looks at the blinkensign and asks, "Are such things common in a time when there is more... technology?"

"I'm Murata! Oh, yes! If you go to Tokyo you'll see lots of flashy lights, some as big as a building!"

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Master Murata," she says, curtsying. "This Tokyo, I've not heard of it, but it must be a marvelous place in which to live." She's not sure if she really believes what she just said, as she's finding the sign rather garish, now that the initial shock has worn off, but she's not about to put down a place she's never heard of before.

"Oh, it's very fun! Busy!" He grins.

"It must be a large city. Is it bigger than London?" she asks, artlessly. "I'm afraid I've not been to any large cities. I was on my way to Bath with my friends Mr. and Mrs. Allen when I came upon this place."

"It's huge! I haven't been to London though, so I can't compare it, really."

Actually he may have been there but offhand he couldn't recall that life.

"So have you been here for very long?"

"Neither have I, to tell the truth," she replies. "I have only seen engravings of it, and heard Mister Allen describe it after he's returned from a trip on business."

"So you haven't travelled very far from home before?"

"No, I've only been as far as the villages around our village," she admits. "I was on the road to Bath, a city about a day's carriage drive away, when I stumbled upon this place."

"It is! Till now, I have only dreamed or read about a house as marvelous as this, and yet, here I am, living here," she says. "It is better even than I could have dreamed."

"It's pretty remarkable, this place. It always seems to adapt to the people who are living here."

"As if it knew our thoughts and wishes and needs," she says. "Oh, truly, there is magic here, don't you think?"
