tell the rambler, the gambler, the back-biter [introduction]

Mattie sleeps well, considering the long day she's had. Little Blackie is nearby her, which comforts her and makes her feel safe. She's still afraid of the snakes that come out at night even though Rooster told her that they don't attack young girls, but for now, she tries to forget that ( Read more... )

Some time later, when Mattie's adequately settled, she might come across some uplifted trailer trash in the common room.

Niko is reading Nietzsche and frowning quite a bit - he'll probably be glad to be disturbed.

It's a bit chilly, so he's actually wearing his signature trench coat, even inside, though he's not wearing boots, but rather some woolly slippers that we can probably safely blame on Jaenelle.

Punting this one, but if you want anyone in particular, feel free to poke me! <3

Mattie's actually sitting nearby, looking curiously at some of the magazines there--she's really not sure what they're supposed to be. When she sees Niko, she'll turn towards him, intrigued.

"Hello, sir," she says politely. "I have never been more of a reader myself, but I am curious as to what you have there."

"Nietzsche," Nik replies. "Ever heard of him? He's a grumpy old German man who thinks God is dead."

He doesn't mind the interruption - he actually was getting fairly annoyed with his reading.

She shakes her head. "No, I have not. Is it boring?"

"Wouldn't call it that, no," Niko mutters. "Just frustrating." He closes the book, makes sure to mark the page.

"Haven't seen you in these parts before, kiddo."

"That's because I am new," she says with a nod. "My name is Mattie Ross, and I was exploring this place."

"Welcome to the Frat house," Niko offers gently. "You okay? You don't look particularly worried, for a new transplant."

"I'm fine," she says firmly yet gently. "I'm merely impressed with this place, rather than frightened of it."

Niko leans back in his seat, gives the girl a bit of an eyebrow (but not much). "Stout kid," he says, which coming from him is a lot. "Where' you from? The Midwest, huh?"

"Dardanelle, Arkansas, sir," she replies with a nod. "But I was in the Choctaw Nation before I came here."

"... don't actually know where that is - but I've been across Arkansas, briefly."

Niko probably sounds like a Yankee, though his accent is, well... a mutt's accent, predictably.

"It's my home, but as I said, I was venturing out for an important mission when I came here."

"Sounds like it," Niko replies. "Wanna talk about it?" He pats the couch - nothing creepy about it, we assure you. Just his usual big-brother ways. "You can sit, you know."

She sits, then. "I don't suppose you know a man named Tom Chaney, do you?"

"Doesn't ring a bell," Niko replies. "Should I know him?"

"Perhaps not," she admits. "But I am looking for him. Hunting him down, to be exact."
