[Halloween crackplot] Guess whoooo?

Morgoth has been observing. First, it was the intriguing being with the purple eyes and the elflings, scouring the forest for snakes, toads, spiders and the like. Then it was again this same being and an Atan, placing them in various places throughout the Mansion - mice in drawers, beetles on tables, snakes in cupboards, etc.

The traps amused ( Read more... )

Mal was rummaging in the cupboards, looking for a can of tomatoes to toss into the stew he was about to make, when he opened a cabinet door and unleashed a garter snake as long as himself and as big around as his arm. He staggered back, cursing and grabbing for a chair to hold it back, while he unholsters his pistol...

Just at that moment, Guinevere walks in. Sees the snake.

And SCREAMS.

It's unclear, however, if she's afraid for the man or the snake at this point.

Considering her history with a certain type of snake, anything is possible.

"[Goddamn it to Satan's chamberpot], where'd that come from," he mutters. And then he spies Gwen. "Better stay back, yer queenliness, it's 'bout get a bit fierce in here." He jabs at the snake with the chair, trying to anger it into rearing up and opening its mouth so he can fire down the thing's throat.

Instead, the snake clamps down on his boot.

Dammit!

Guinevere stares, pauses for breath, and screams again.

Helpful, we know.

He jabs at the creature with the legs of the chair, trying to get it to let go. The snake hangs on even harder, and to his eyes, it looks like it's gotten bigger and longer. He steps on it with his free foot, pinning it down and hitting it again with the chair, before shooting it behind the head.

And missing.

What the what was that ---- the gun's detonation makes her freak out even more, and she backs out of the kitchen, or tries, but instead hits the wall.

And another terrified scream.

She's going to have a sore throat at this rate.

Might I bring another critter in from behind her on my next? Sorry she's not more helpful. >.<

He fires again, managing to put daylight -- or night light -- through the back of the snake's head. The beast twitches and he rams it with the chair legs again.

"Huff... Someone's got a ruttin' bad idea of a Hallowe'en trick," he mutters, clunking the chair back onto its legs and holstering his pistol. Then turning to Gwen, he adds, "You all right there, yer queenliness? That thing didn't lash y' with its tail?"

Gwen is still plastered against the wall, breathing heavily, raggedly, and staring at Mal.

She's almost as afraid of him as she was of the snake, because what did he just do?

"--- nnnno," she pants, and shakes her head, eyes wide.

"Y' all right there, Gwen? Yer shakin' like a leaf," he asks, turning to her without taking a step toward her, not wanting to make her feel cornered.

"What --- what -- was that, sir?"

She's in too great a shock to even be obfuscated that he called her by her familiar.

"That loud racket? Just how we kill nasty critters in my world," he says. "Weapon's kinda like a slingshot, only a helluva lot louder. See here." With that he unholsters the pistol and holding it on the palm of his hand, holds it out for her inspection.

Guinevere reaches out timidly, barely touches the metal, and withdraws her hands.

Did you remove the ammunition, Mal? Because Guinevere might be a public danger to other sand to herself with a gun in her hands. Then again, that could be fun.

He's more than willing to explain: this one's a lot more receptive than some folk from her world. He opens the breech, unloading the bullets from the cylinder into the palm of his free hand. "These here are bullets. Y' load 'em into th' cylinder. Y' pull the trigger here." He points to it. "That raises the hammer inside, which hits a charge on th' end a' the bullet*. That's where that loud bang come from. The charge forces the bullet out through the barrel." He runs his fingertip along the length of the pistol from the breech to the muzzle. "And the bullet hits some damn giant snake. Or whatever target yer aimin' at."

*(Typist is going out on a limb describing the caseless rounds which seem ubiquitous in the Firefly-verse...)

"Oh." Guinevere blinks at him, then at the gun. "--- so... it is like a bow and arrow, only... it looks different, and the arrow is very small?"

Is cool, you. ^^

"Helluva lot louder, too." He gives her a crooked but pleased smile. "Y' got it, Gwen. Yer quick on th' uptake." Quicker than some other folk from her time-and-place.

Guinevere blinks. "What did you call me?"

Not even her husband, not even Sir Lancelot, or Sebastian have ever called her a diminutive.
