It rolled back and forth, telling her story of always being parted between duty and love, between family and memories, between so many choices -- Idril-of-the-many-Choices, she should have been named. Sparkling brilliance? Too often shaded by doubt and fear. And now, with all her past fears running before her eyes, after the fight between the man she loved and the man she loathed -- scolded, or? --, craddling her small son against her shivering bossom, she could only cry.
But after the first burst there wasn't another. She crushed the painful image of her cousin losing his balance and falling -- falling, falling over -- under teary eyelids, and swallowed bile. Perhaps it is indeed like this how it should come to pass, for everyone finally find peace.
When she finally had the courage to open her pale blue eyes again, she saw no rocks, no abyss. She was surrounded by darkening green fields, and it appeared to be almost twilight. She could see the trembling surface of the lake somewhere close. Idril thought she must have fainted, so she tried to will her body to come back to senses; mostly because she had no child in her arms, no life form -- her little Eärendil was gone.
