Traditional Arrangement, Danu
From their Think Before You Think CD
Liner Notes:This song has its origins in North America but it was Donnchadha's mam, Ann, that we first heard singing it. Later, we heard it from a recording of Liam Clancy, who is a great friend and who was of great support to us in the making of this album.
Come all you fair and tender ladies,
Take a warning how you court young men,
For they're like a star on a cloudy morning:
First they'll appear and then they're gone. I just got off the phone with C. We were discussing the fact that I cannot visualize. If I close my eyes I see darkness. Which is why my prescient dreams are so memorable. It's possibly traced back to the medication. One effect of those meds is to shut down visual receptors, preventing hallucinations. But that's not why I'm writing this entry.
They'll tell to you some loving stories
And they'll swear to you that their love is true;
Straight away they'll go court some other
And that's the love they have for youShe got into one of my non-od diaries. Recommended I change the password to something I don't usually use. And she read something I wrote for M once. About Moulin Rouge and the song from that. "Once you loved me that way, I wonder what happened to the romance in my life?" she asked. I had naught to say. When we were done, I went back to playing pool. And listening to this CD. And this song came up.
Don't you remember our days of courting,
You told me then that you loved me best;
You could make me believe with the falling of your arm
That the sun rose in the west.I'm good at romance. I'm good at the chase. It's life that gives me problems. Once I've wooed a woman I can't keep her, because I know she'll find out that I am not who wooed her and she won't accept me. Yes, I know that's paranoia... And I'm dealing with that. But it is true.
If I had known before I courted
I never would have courted none;
I'd have locked my heart in a box of golden,
Fastened down with a silver pin.Is it better to have lived and loved than never to have loved at all? Or perhaps it is better asked, is it better to have lived and loved then never to have lived at all?
I wish I could answer that question. I'm not sure I have ever loved. Been flushed with romance? Yes, but love? I'll get back to you on that.
Peace, Gentle Readers
