Pale, fat, and tired

In contrast to Brian's "Fit, tanned, and rested" post, I had an exhausting week off.  It was a four-state (NY-PA-NJ-CT) holiday tour of visiting family and friends.  I ate more in one week than I had in the past several months combined.  We had something to do pretty much every day.  Don't get me wrong--all the parties and activities were fun and we had a great week.  But I would have liked just one day to schlub on the couch, especially since I was sick for most of the vacation.  I had a cold from the first half, followed by a stomach bug from the 31st-now.  I puked before midnight on New Year's Eve after only a few drinks.  LAME.  But I think it was a combination of drinking crappy wine on top of having some very questionable leftovers for lunch, and not just from drinking.  Either way, my stomach is still feeling wonky.  We also didn't get home from CT until after 9pm last night, because we got stuck in traffic dropping off the car to Mike's dad, whose new wife lives in CT, causing us to miss our train.  We had to wait for like 45 min for the next train to NYC, and then had to take the subway home from Grand Central--total trip took almost 5 craptastic hours during which I prayed to keep my toast down.  I wanted to call in sick today, because I genuinely feel like sh*t, but my company won't pay you for the sick day, if it's the day after a holiday.

Mike and I took both of our moms to see the Tesoros exhibit at the PMA on the 26th.  I thought the first room that held indigenous art was really interesting, and the last section with the series of paintings on combined races was really cool.  I especially liked the names for some of the race combos - some of which we've heard before, like Spanish + African = Mullato.  But new ones I personally liked were Spanish + Albino = Reverse Backwards; and Spanish + Reverse Backwards = Suspend in Midair.   WTF?!  How does one even use that in a sentence?  "I can't believe Antonio is dating that little Reverse Backwards tramp!  I hope he doesn't knock her up or we'll have to deal with a Suspend in Midair for a  grandchild!"  Very strange.

The religious art in between was just like all the other religious art we've seen in the museums we recently visited in Spain and the Netherlands.  You could have told me it was from any country in Europe from the same era, and I wouldn't have doubted you.  Some of it was particularly gruesome too, except for several portrayals Michael the Archangels--they all looked like Campbell's soup girls.  Oh, and one of the St. Christophers looked like Hugh Laurie from House.  Mike and I both found the exhibit kind of disappointing, because we both hoped there'd be more indigenous art or at least indigenous influenced art.  Seemed like it was more the other way around...European influence on indigenous art.  But I guess that's kind of the point of the whole conquest thing, right?

Anyway, 2006 was a great year for us.  I'm very luck that Mike's family has embraced me so wholeheartedly, just as my family has embraced him.  And he's been waiting on me all week, because I haven't been feeling well.  Despite feeling yucky, I'm feeling very lucky today.  Here's hoping 2007 is even better!

Happy New Year, everyone!
